1911 in 9mm what to get?

Postby TH3180 on Sun Dec 05, 2010 11:40 am

I am thinking about a new pistol. I will probably be buying something in the next few months. A little history on me. I started shooting March of this year. I started off with a few .22lr pistols. I bought a G17 in May and I am now reloading 9mm. When I go to the range I bring a box or two of 9mm and a few hundred .22lr. I don't have a big shooting budget that's why I shoot a lot more .22lr then 9mm.

I figure I already have a polymer gun that I like. I have a revolver .22lr and .22lr auto loaders. I am interested in the 1911 platform. One thing I have to keep in mind is I have a strict shooting budget. I really don't want to buy a gun I can't afford to shoot when ever I want to shoot it.

I am looking for opinions on a 1911 in 9mm. Let me hear everything pros, cons, which ones to look into and which I should stay away from. This is all still new to me so any help you folks can give would be great. I have done some searches on google for 9mm 1911s and I am having trouble. My searches bring me to manufactures web sites and then I have to go through every gun to see what calibers it comes in. I'm sure once I get some answers I will have many more questions, but I need a starting point. Also I will not be caring this gun, just target and plinking.

Thanks
Tim

Pretty tough deal to beat for $380, considering your budget constraints.

I'd consider a Springfiled or an STI. Hard to go wrong with either on. STI offers a number of models and a Springfield Loaded is on heck of a gun.

I really like my Springfield Loaded Stainless 9mm. Another option that is really gaining in popularity is the STI Spartan. It's a great value.

I really like my Para Ordnance P18 9mm. I bought it from Bill's south where it had been a range rental. After about 1000 rounds through it I had to replace the power extractor hook which had a chip missing, (Para sent me 2 free for the asking) but other than that it has been great, and is incredibly accurate.

I had a Springfield and 2 Colt series 70 in 9mm, all 3 jammed like crazy with factory and handloads-tried 10 or 12 different magazines. Would only recommend one with a fully ramped barrel as this seemed to be the only cure for the jamming.

I've never really heard of a Springfield jamming unless someone unqualified has been monkeying around with it. Did you buy them new?

Springfield was new in the box, but a older version without ramped barrel. I believe that newer Springfield 9's have ramped barrels. Colts were used, sold them.
A friend of mine had the same issue with his Springfield 9, he sent his to the factory...they replaced the non-ramped barrel with a ramped one.

Why do you want a 1911 in 9mm? Is it just because you want metal, or would something like a browning hi-power be alright too?

I want to collect/shoot all kinds of guns. Yes I want my next pistol to be metal. My reason for 1911 is the platform has been around for 100 years and I know I will own one at some point so I figured why not have it be my next gun.
The BHP is not a gun I thought about but I am going to. Heck maybe I should wait on a 1911 untill I want a 45. As for Browning as a company. When my Buck Mark had major leading issues, Browning to care of me. So I would own another Browning product in a heart beat. Thanks for the advice on the BHP.

I have a Para LTC in 9mm that is a true single stack 1911. Can't say enough good things about it.
