CC gun for Small Hands part II

Postby Flip on Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:58 pm

OK,

Thanks for everyone who posted. I'm thinking now of something like the compact M&P (not sure of caliber yet) or perhaps the Beretta 9000. Does anyone else have ideas? I tried the XP, it's nice but I'm not sure if it fits me (I'll try to shoot one before I make a final decision). I really like the 1911's but my thumb can't reach the mag release. I tried the Kahr, it seemed nice but didn't fit my hand either. I'm open to most anything but for now, the M&P seems to be in the lead.

Finally, I've read a lot of bad reviews on the Beretta but it felt pretty good in my hand. I also read several good reviews. Your opinions on the 9000s? Let me know.

Thanks

I have a 9000S in .40 S&W. I like it. It shoots well and has been very reliable.

But just remember, this gun is a tool. It is not something to take to the range for a couple of hundred rounds (though I have).

And hey, it's stylish. I mean Tom Cruise used one in one of his movies. ;)

I do not understand the issue with the mag release with small hands, My wife has tiny hands, but shoots a 1911 commander light weight very well. When she reloads, the gun pivots about 90% in her hands, so she is pushing straight at the mag release, and then she rolls it back to fire.

The Beretta 9000S is set up to ergonomically mimic the 1911. Though it is DA/SA, it's saftey and hammer are set up just like a 1911. Heck, you can even carry it cocked and locked, if you wanted to.

A M&P compact is a good choice. Or you can go for a single stack pistol like a Smith 3913, Sigs, Kel-tec PF9 and many more.

First I have no experience with the 9000s.
Second I wear size small gloves.
Of the three M&P, XD45, 1911 the M&P is the only one that I can reach the mag release without repositioning my grip, Like 1911fan stated if you slighly rotate the gun in your hand the mag safety is easy to reach on any of the three. I could probably do better with pics but try this. With the pistol in your right hand slightly rotate the gun to the left by rotating your wrist inward and upward while hitting the mag release until your looking at the bottom of the magwell the pistol is now in position to look your reload right into the magwell. For me this all happens on a normal reload anyway so reaching the mag release doesnt matter unless I want to be standing around with a empty gun. NOT!!!

You best bet is to head to the gun shop of your choosing and start putting them in your hand. Point the firearm in a safe direction (maybe at the floor) and aim the thing. Insert and drop the mag a few times. You will very quickly find that some feel better than others, some feel downright horrible, and there will be a few that feel great. The great ones are going to be your choices. The folks at the gun shop may have some input, but let your hands and holding it be the judge.

I might start with the M&P compact, the Springfield XD subcompact, and a couple of the smaller Taurus Mileniums. See how they feel, and go from there.

And a good RSO would jump all over her for not pointing her firearm in a safe .........read DOWNRANGE direction.

Rotateing the pistol in your hand can be done without breaking the 180.

It's much easier and safer to hit the mag release with the weak thumb as the hand sweeps to the replacement mag. With a little practice it is about a 10th of a second slower that a strong thumb release.

Keep it safe.... :)

I had to read that three times before I could pictur a weak thumb release while the weak hand was on the way to the mag holder ... But that's probably because I have large hands and have never thought to try it.

[quoteI really like the 1911's but my thumb can't reach the mag release.][/quote]

Don't give up on a 1911 yet. The new Springfield EMP has a smaller grip than the standard 1911. Also you can get thin grips for any 1911 that makes the grip fell much smaller. (These grips require special grip screw bushings.) My Springfield Micro came with them. Brownell's sells the grips and grip screws.

If the mag release is your only dislike with the feel of a 1911 I think you can find a good solution to reaching it. I think I have always rotated my grip slightly (about the axis of the grip keeping the muzzle downrange) when reloading the magazine.
Because I care, I carry.

At least look at the CZ 75 compact; and perhaps the Bersa in .380 or 9mm. Great guns...decent pricing...good for smaller hands.

The Springfield EMP also is a nice smaller hands gun.

But, probably not the CZ 97 ! :)
