Police going back to 9mm?

Postby Flip on Wed May 25, 2011 7:45 pm

I talked with someone who heard that the police in Brainerd are moving from 40 back to 9mm citing the improvement in bullets and ballistics.

Others appear to be doing this ...

Is this a $$ things or do you think bullets and ballistics are that much better?

Most cops can't shoot for ****, so it's probably a capacity issue.

Law enforcement style shooting is different. They have specialized teams for various situations. Without going into all the details, I will mention this. They need higher capacity not because many are undertrained, but they usually provide cover fire which allows teams to advance or retreat. This is one of the big reasons why capacity is important to law enforcement.

They are going to 9mm because of the cost and shortage of .40, according to a police chief I know that orders ammo for his (small) department. The cops have to get the ammo through the procurment process, and it takes months for 40. Some departments have not gotten ammo for training etc.

Apparently 9mm is readily available.

Scott county went to 9mm because they liked the penetration they saw in the testing.

My department has been 9mm for decades.

Glock 17's with tac lights since 2003'ish.

Prior to that it was the S&W stainless 690X series.

Before that, wheel guns.
