Reliabilty

Postby grousemaster on Thu Jun 09, 2011 8:36 pm

Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on reliability/ruggedness of a top notch 1911 vs. a popular polymer pistol (i.e. glock, xd, H&K, etc). If you were dropped into a war zone or unknown terrain would you want your trusty 1911 or a plastic gun? (pretend capacity is the same for practical purposes)

sigh......

Glock, 1911 and 92FS/M9....(owned them all)

Other than a revolver....

92FS/M9 every time.

War zone? You can keep your pistol. I'll take an AK.

Glock... no other gun mentioned can be completely disassembled to it's bare parts like the Glock can (with one small tool). I'm also of the opinion that none of the guns mentioned can truly take the abuse a Glock could.

With FarmerJ here I shoot my 92FS just a tad bit better than my 1911 and I hate glocks, so it would be 92FS->1911->anything else->glock

Truthfully ruggedness I don't know if I feel there is a big difference 1911 or the 92 to me

In a war zone?

A GI issue 1911. Not my fancy guns here that I can keep clean.

The slop will keep it running, and .45 ball has it all over 9mm ball. If I'm shooting a pistol any further than I could throw it in a war zone, I'm doing something wrong.

You've obviously never owned a 1911. I can detail strip a GI model 1911 to it's individual parts in a matter of minutes with no tools. And to say that plastic can handle more abuse than steel is silly.

Thanks for playing though!

BTW, there is no one right answer to this question (except for a rifle). Most issues with quality, well maintained firearms are opreator error or ammunition issues. Purchase quality firearms, learn how to do proper maintainence, learn how to use your weapon, use quality ammunition that your gun likes, and you shouldn't have any issues

I'd say an AR-15.

For a sidearm, I'd go with my Kimber Warrior.

Well, there's this.

If you really want AK-like reliability in a handgun, you need to go back 60+ years and get a Webley or Enfield pistol.

This argument is perpetually silly. I've taken a bunch of classes were we all had to wait around for someone to get their handgun running. I'm not going to elaborate on the handgun, but I think we've all seen this (unless you're taking classes where the load-out is 50 rounds).

guess one can get the best of both worlds and get a CZ-52.

Package in the hand, power of an AK.

I especially love it when the owner acts like it's never happened with their gun before  . I can't really think of a specific brand that fails more than any other. Cept maybe Glock, but that's not fair when half the guns on the line are Glocks.
