Looking for some 1911 advice - PURCHASE MADE

Postby meddin on Sat Jun 18, 2011 6:19 pm

I'm sure this topic hs been beat to death, but I will ask it anyway. I am interested in buying my first 1911, and really don't know where to begin. I dont see myself customizing it much, so looking fo something that is a good shooter out of the box. I plan on it being a range toy, not primary carry weapon. My budget is sub $1000. Hopefully in the $800 range or less.

Looks are somewhat important (stainless is a plus if possible). I was assuming Springfield will be a strong candidate, but was wondering if anyone had any other thouhts?

Help me begin the addiction!

Thanks in advance!

Both colt and Springfield have strong candidates in that price range.

There are several of us who would be willing to meet up and let you try some candidates.

There is a springer loaded for sale on the board here that is a very good choice.

Springer Loaded was going to be my suggestion as well. It will more than likely be my next 1911 purchase

I don't disagree ... I jest find it sad that, arguably, the three best pistol manufacturers in America, each offer 1911's, made in America ... and when push comes to shove, what does everyone want? ... a Brazilian import.

If I was on the board of any of them companies, I'd fire everyone, starting with the CEO's, not directly involved with production ... oh, and whoever's in charge of the Houlton, ME factory, too! Image

... and it's the same exact ****in' 100yr-old design! ... this ain't Windows vs. Mac, here!

Yes, because not having sales or marketing or support would make your product a best seller... right?

if you are looking for a 5 inch barrel look at the Smith & wesson or springfield. IMHO Colt is a overpriced just to get the name. but it is also true that eventually you "have" to have a colt in your collection.
for a GI model look at the springfield

Well ... way I see it is, folks want the Springfield, 'cause it's more like the 1911 was 100yr ago ... no 80-Series 'er Schwartz ... only significant difference is the beavertail ... and Ruger F'd that up.

So ... YA! ... I bet if I was in charge, I could sell more 'n a few ... particularly with the names "Ruger", "S&W", or "Colt" on the side!

Hell, at the very least, I could do a damn sight better 'n the morons they got, now! Image

I went the Springfield GI stainless route. Have done alot of work to it since. In hind sight I wish I would just have went with the Loaded model or I saw the Springfield Range Officer a few months ago and thats a fine piece also. I'm totally happy with my GI and doing the work I did to it gave me an awesome learning experience that I never would have gotten if I had bought something already customized. With the budget you have you will have no problem getting a nice 1911. Beware...... once you get one you'll want more.

Getting into 1911 with a budget.....you are in for a world of hurt. ;)

I am sure others will give you great advice, but if you are not dead set on 1911 style or you just want to explore further don't buy cheap 1911s as they will lose value or if they malfunction you will join the many who blame 1911 failures based on cheap examples.

Buy popular models that are not extremely unique. 1911 owners like interchangeable parts. Buy a springer and you will be able to resell it easy. Buy a Taurus new and you will find it hard to get the money you put in (take it easy all you Taurus owners, I own this POS too).

$1000 budget is a good range for starting out in 1911s. You are in the lower end 1911 range, but not at POS range.

I know that a firearm is a tool that is begging to be used. But I find it really really hard to take out that $3000 Nighthawk out shooting compared to beating the snot out of PT1911 and using TRP for competitions. The customizability of 1911s is a gift and a curse. So buying a well known factory production that is sold in large quantities guarantees that it will work as well as those hand fit ones.

If you know you are going to keep it, you can do the GI model and then upgrading it. Make sure you start with a steel frame as you don't know how far you want to go with it someday. But once again, the resale value will be crap.
