Getting into 1911 with a budget.....you are in for a world of hurt.
I am sure others will give you great advice, but if you are not dead set on 1911 style or you just want to explore further don't buy cheap 1911s as they will lose value or if they malfunction you will join the many who blame 1911 failures based on cheap examples.
Buy popular models that are not extremely unique. 1911 owners like interchangeable parts. Buy a springer and you will be able to resell it easy. Buy a Taurus new and you will find it hard to get the money you put in (take it easy all you Taurus owners, I own this POS too).
$1000 budget is a good range for starting out in 1911s. You are in the lower end 1911 range, but not at POS range.
I know that a firearm is a tool that is begging to be used. But I find it really really hard to take out that $3000 Nighthawk out shooting compared to beating the snot out of PT1911 and using TRP for competitions. The customizability of 1911s is a gift and a curse. So buying a well known factory production that is sold in large quantities guarantees that it will work as well as those hand fit ones.
If you know you are going to keep it, you can do the GI model and then upgrading it. Make sure you start with a steel frame as you don't know how far you want to go with it someday. But once again, the resale value will be crap.
