Thinking of upgrading pocket pistols...

Postby PHATSPEED7x on Mon Jul 18, 2011 10:58 am

I currently have a Taurus TCP, and it's been a good little pocket pistol. Always go bang when I pull the trigger, light weight, easy to conceal. But the cost of .380ACP is making it hard for me to get out and shoot this gun as much as I would like. So I've been looking at the single stack 9mm market. There are several gun shops that stock the Kel Tec PF9. I've read nothing but good things about this gun. Would it be a worth wild upgrade?

I'd recommend going and shooting one first even if you have to rent it.

Them pocket 9's have a good whip that I don't like shooting them.

On Paper, the Keltec single stack 9 sounds great. In person ... It's not too bad but I'd like to shoot one a lot more to see how well I like it. The slide stop is huge, sticks way out and is sharp ...

I have a Kahr PM9 and love it, comfortable to shoot and 0 failures. For $200 less you can pick up a CM9 that has the same internals.

I can shoot my TCP for quite a while before my hands start to hurt. I'm sure I could handle to recoil of the single stack 9mm. I'll have to see if I can find some one who owns one, and get a opportunity to shoot it.

Depends
I started off with J frames Kahrs etc and downsized to a P3AT, I recently purchased a PF9 for the potential ballistics it doesnt appear much bigger then the P3AT but it doesnt disappear as easily.
What are you payin for .380 vs 9mm? Takeing the price difference how much .380 shooting can you do if you took the $275-300 spent on the PF9 and purchase ammo with it.

I dont think any of the pocket pistols are anything I would consider a range pistol recoil isnt unbearable but 25-50 rds and I have had enough, If I am going to go shooting just for sake of shooting I would much prefer a full size handgun the only exception would be a Ruger SP101 and thats not quite my ideal of pocket pistol weight.

I have a Ruger LC9 and you can shoot that all day long without any problems.

No they don't. They do have a rather hard trigger pull though.

Personal preference then.

The pocket 9 Keltecs and Kahr's I have shot I don't like. Enough so, I won't try them again. I would consider one in a .380 though.

I carried a PM9 fer a couple years ... shot it a fair amount ... usually 100rd/session ... no ill effects ... accurate 'nuff.

I don't see the harm in tryin' a 9mm ... but don't trade-in yer .380 on it ... keep/carry both fer a while ... THEN decide!

I have a KelTec P-11 and a Kahr PM9. I can't say either is really a joy to shoot - but the Kahr is far and a way less painful.

I have a PF9 and love it. I think the recoil has something to do with hand size. If it fits you, you hardly notice it and if it don't it does sting a bit.

The Mrs. has a CW9 that has always been easy for me to shoot. If Mrs. C. doesn't hold it right it will abrade the top of her thumb but the judicial application of emery cloth and a Houge Handall Jr. has gone a long way to mitigate that. The best advice is to try it before you buy it no matter what format you choose.

A 20 oz 9mm is going to bite a bit, especially if you run full power 124 grain like I do, and not underpowered 115 grain target ammo.

I like my PF9 just fine though. It's a bit longer than a P3AT, but, IMO, is almost precisely as easy to conceal. Perfectly comfortable in just a t-shirt and shorts without a belt. Sights are good, I don't think the slide stop is any grabbier than any other gun I've ever carried. It is a slide stop, however, and not a slide release. It's a bit tough to manipulate with your strong hand thumb, either left hand it, or slingshot. Long trigger reset means the gun is slower, shot to shot, in my hands than my other pistols, but IMO it's better than the P3AT I used to have.
