Shopping for Ammo at Wal-Mart

Postby tizzo on Thu Sep 01, 2011 9:14 pm

I happened to stop by the Wal-Mart in Shakopee and went over to the sporting goods section to check out their prices on ammo. I stood there staring at the shelf full of 380 AUTO, 38 special, 44 mag, .223, etc. But I was looking for 9mm, where the hell was it, did they not sell it? An employee happened to round the endcap so I asked him. He says, "oh, it's locked up in the cabinet under the counter." I said, "that's odd, seems everything else is out here on the shelf." He laughs and says something like "don't ask me why".

As he ran through the boxes they had down there, nothing at the price point I thought was worth the purchase, I saw that all they had locked up was 9mm.

Long story so I can ask my question... what's the deal with locking up only the 9mm caliber? I had to be staring at that damn shelf for a good 5 minutes.

I figured the didn't sell it. That is screwed up. You know if you started reloading you wouldn't have to worry about it.

I just bought $160 of that Federal #8 Target Shotgun loads in the Shakopee Walmart. And yes I never see the 9mm ammo there. I never shop for it but still.

'Cause a Walm*A*Part employee needed their stash of 9mm and didn't want it sold out.

I buy 9mm 100rd WWB at wally world all the time...
At $23-24 it's cost competitive for even 1000 case buys online.

I've never had it be sold out and I've never seen anything but shot-shell out on the shelf on the 4 that I've been to around my area.

Maybe you're just far enough away from the cities that they don't care?

^Been my observation at the WallyWorlds I've been to; most ammo/ ALL handgun ammo locked up.

Shakopee is the only store I've seen ONLY the 9mm locked up. I've asked every time, and no one knows why.

The W/M he is talking about had all the ammo locked up. They did a remodel about a year ago and the locked cases went away. With that a place on the shelve for 9mm went away also. Now I know where it went if I get in a pinch.

That would explain why I never saw it there. Next time I'm there I'll ask. They have everything else on the shelves, go figure.

I was there a few days ago, and the only stuff that was not up for grabs was the 9mm.

Eden prairie had a remodel a year ago, and locked everything up... Which is just great, because you get to wait 15 mins for the circle of Rhodes Scholars to figure out who has the keys.

I had the same response at the Shakopee Wally world. Makes no sense to me.

Exactly! the average Joe will walk up, look, and think gee no 9mm. Guess I better go to FF Our own little private stash in a way? :)
