Baby Eagle 2? AR 24? CZ?

Postby Snowgun on Wed Sep 21, 2011 12:12 am

I have this urge to buy a steel clone of a browning hi power. (I believe CZ cloned hipower, which was cloned by tangfolio, which was cloned by Sarsilmaz, which armalite rebranded, which was cloned by IWI, which was rebranded by Magnum research?) :)

The damn witness is too big for my hand in the large frame, and I'm not getting a Sarsilmaz proper....

Soooo, I'm interested in what all you internet ninja's think about the AR 24 or the Baby Eagle II (which has my vote right now). I know there are a bunch of CZ lovers out there, but i've heard that these two have better specs and finish, etc. CZ SP01 shadow is on the list however...

I'd probably be using these for production or SSP/ESP competition if that helps frame things...

BONUS POINTS:

Where can I look at or shoot any of these guns? (not including the CZ)

The Baby Eagles are HEAVY, as in almost Hi-Point heavy...If memory serves, they are CZ clones made by Jericho, and I don't recall the grip being that much smaller, if at all. I think the AR 24's do have a slightly smaller grip profile, but the cheezy plastic grip panels on the composite frame make it kinda Glocky, and certainly not as high class as the Gen 4 Glocks. If the grip size of an EAA is too big for you, not sure how you're going to find another CZ clone that will be a good fit for your hands. A CZ RAMI might be worth looking into, if you want a 9mm...

I know people always refer to these guns as clones of the Hi-Power, and it terms of their operating systems they are, but it should be noted that their slides ride inside their frames, unlike a Hi-Power's, which rides outside. It's partially a cosmetic difference, but it does lead to a thinner, lighter gun, and a tighter frame-to-slide fit, due to the full-length rails. Shake a Hi-Power side-to-side, and then any of the above, and you'll see what I mean. I see them as very similar, but not clones.

I don't have a Baby Eagle, but I do have a CZ75 and an AR24 (and a Belgian Hi-Power, for that matter). I like the AR24 better than the CZ. It's a pretty heavy gun, since it's all steel, and it feels great in my hand, is accurate, and reliable. I love the way the rear of the slide closely mimics the shape of my all-time favorite gun, the SIG P210. My only complaint about the AR24 is that the trigger is just a tad creepy, but no more than a CZ75; it's only creepy compared to what I normally like in a pistol. I also like that it's made by the legendary Turkish gunmaker Sarsilmaz, as it's the only firearm I have that's been made by them.

As always, try both (or all three), and get the one that turns you on the most.

Another good CZ contender right now is Canik (made in Turkey) and they are selling directly on GB for very good discounts. They have an alloy frame compact which is what I bought. It is 2oz lighter than the CZ PCR and has safety instead of decocker.

I am looking for heavy, though hopefully under the 38 or 39 oz that is the limit for IDPA SSP.

I worry about the availability of aftermarket parts for the AR24 and the Jerico....But I could probably machine something in my spare time.... :?

David, could you elaborate on the trigger? do you know if it is something that could be worked on? How is the reset?

This is part of the problem, I'm not sure where I can get my hands on a baby eagle or a AR 24....

I have an old beater Baby Eagle/Jericho with a frame safety and I really like it. Very comfortable and accurate. Great trigger. Like was previously mentioned, it is very heavy. They are overbuilt guns that could go through the end of the world a few times.

No. CZ-75 and Hi-power are not the same at all. They are both 9mm pistols and barrel locks in a similar way, but the internals are not even close. And CZ slide rides inside the frame where Hi-power slide is the other way around.

Well, you can certainly borrow my AR24, and there's probably someone around here who might let you fondle his or her Baby Eagle. Just let me know if you want to go that route, and I'd be happy to toss in my Hi-Power and CZ75 as well.

Regarding the trigger, I suspect that it could be made less creepy. I've gotten a taste for that "glass rod" trigger that everyone gushes about, so my definition of creepy might be different than other people's, but there is definitely a small amount of movement before it trips. Again, not any more than most pistols, but it's not like a SIG or nice 1911 or anything like that. Regarding reset, I'd have to look at it again to be sure, since it's been a while since I've done that, but it's less than an XD and more than a Glock. In other words, acceptable compared to other pistols, especially in its price range. I'll mess with it tonight and come back here to update that if it differs significantly from my recollection.

As an interesting (to me) aside, I found this pistol at Joe's. It was brand new, never fired, but was being sold as "used" because the guy who bought it brought it back the same day, unfired, because his wife freaked out and told him to take it out of the house when he brought it home. Thus, Joe's had to buy it back as used and sell it "used," and priced it accordingly. I got it for $389. Not bad for a "new" AR24, I thought!

I might have to take you up on the AR24, and i'm interested in what you find out about the reset...

This thing looks awesome! Did they move the safety to the slide on all Baby eagle 2's? What is the trigger like?

Good catch....found it:

JERICHO 941 (38.5 oz.), 941F (38.5 oz.), 941FB (30.4 oz.), 941FBL (24 oz.), 941FS (31.8 oz.), 941S (33.9 oz.)
ARMALITE AR24 (34.9 oz.), AR24K (33.4 oz.)
and all the cz shadows

Think they are all good to go...Say Westberg, what is your take on using any of these platforms?
