Grip Chop on XD

Postby tweener on Wed Oct 26, 2011 9:54 pm

Anyone on here have an XD with the grip shortened to SC length?

Any gun shops around here do it?

I would consider buying a firearm with the features you want in the caliber you want rather than continuing to try to make something into something else. Just my .02 worth.

He probably wants a longer sighting plane with a short handle. Not at all an unreasonable request (or quest).

You can probably do it yourself.

Buy gun+short magazine. Measure everything 6 times. Wrap the grip in masking tape, draw lines. Saw (bandsaw?) along lines. Clean up any rough edges with sandpaper or a hot object or black epoxy. ????? Profit.

You are more able to ensure a quality outcome doing it yourself than paying a gunsmith. And if you don't have the saw you can buy the saw for the price of the gunsmith. Win-Win.

Grip Chop on XD

Would it not be simpler to buy a factory gun with the caliber, barrel length, and grip size you want? Off the top of my head I can't think of a caliber/ barrel length XD combo SA doesn't offer with a compact grip.

Last time I checked only the XDSC(3"), XD Compact(4"), or XDM Compact (3.8") had the short grips. Either way, If I had a full size grip and wanted the shorter grip, I would cut it.

yea...Am interested in doing it myslef, and just wondering if any locals have done it, or local gunsmiths.....I can't see paying more than about $70 to do this, otherwise I will just do it myself.......would like to see one, maybe shoot one before I do it.

To answer others comments questions......Springfield does not offer an XD .40 in the SC grip length in anything but the 3 inch barrel (which I allready own.) I really like the way the grip is on the SC grip with the pearce pinky extension....it fits my hand perfectly and actually wedges my hand up nice and tight to the gun....a longer grip you end up not as tight up to the gun, and end up with a sub-par grip (IMO)....also since the grip is usually the hardest part to conceal, with a SC grip length and a longer barrel, you can have the best of both worlds.

Yes, it is dissapointing that SF does not offer this gun.....lots of guys on XDtalk have done this mod, and all seem to like it very much....

There has been a 5" compact for a while. Maybe offerings have changed; Currently the SA website shows the only available 5" compact in 45ACP.
Same capacity as the .40S&W XDs FWIW

If you want a shorty 40- better get the grinder out.

Isn't that the standard compact grip height with the extension making it the tactical grip height? That doesn't look to be the same height as my SC does.

I don't quite understand your question;
In 45 ACP, with a 5" barrel, there are two grip/ capacity options: 10 rd (compact)and 13 rd(Tactical), as an original configuration. You can use the 13rd mags w/ a grip extension in the 10 rd 'compact'.
Also with the Pearce(sp?) extensions, you can add 2 rds in 45, 3 rds in 9mm,I believe

Or, like me you rushed out and bought the XD45 right when it came out only to be dismayed the next year when they released the convertible model. :shameonyou:

only the .45 is available in the abreviated grip length with "full length" barrels...

the 9 and 40 are not.

I believe Springer Precision will do it for $75 if I remember correctly. While they have it, have them do a trigger job. You wont be disappointed. I know you were looking for local, but if you have them do some other work, it would help justify the shipping. Plus the have the jig to get it right and bevel the mag well etc...
