My next Duracoat Project*New photos*

Postby mccandmatt on Sat Nov 19, 2011 6:54 pm

Going to duracoat this next thinking of trying the Stainless Steel finish and paint the slide, and leave the frame alone. However this may be to common, I might try something different, make it unique. Any suggestions on finish?

Final Picture. It looks better in the picture than in person unfortunately. Think I am going to strip someday and refinish it in titanium. The duracoat stainless uses multiple colors and they dont seem to mix very well even after shaking the canisters for 5 minutes.

Here is my 1911 I did in the stainless at the same time as the CZ. I found some flat black rubber spray and figured since I hate the stainless steel finish I might as well give this stuff a try. Not sure how well that works, few hours after dried it seems to easily peel off. So I will let it sit longer few days if needed to see if it cures more and adheres to the gun better.

So, how does Duracoat hold up on Glock frames? That lime green is kind of exciting ;)

I sold my Glock with the coated frame, but I'll bring the 1911 that was my first victim, to show you.

Isn't the whole point of dropping a glock to not ever find it again? That's what I'm thinking when I handle them anyway...

The old Nam era tiger stripe camo on the slide would be cool.

I think some earth tones would be cool. A tiger stripe pattern in muted earth tones would be really cool, even if it's just the slide.

I'm partial to the last two myself...it would be neat if you could blend in two or more colors together like shading or fog, or take the grey color and shade it with black.

Shading like this but with different colors, (They have pattern tape on to make cammo, but I would it it without that, just have the shading)

I have to agree. I like it!

First post here.
Would someone be so kind as to educate me on this Duracoat thing. Please point me to some reading, or message thread about the subject. I have a firearm that I am not to excited about the lower and this caught my attention.

Duracoat is a firearm finish that you can buy online, and do it yourself in no time. It's like an epoxy, a binary coaing, there are 150ish colors to choose from and you mix in a hardner to the paint, prep the gun, spray it let it dry over night before handling and in about two weeks the finish is fully cured. It's tough, scratch resistant, doest chip or peel, and they claim it is flexible so it can absorb shock and damage increasing it's life. SO far I have done two guns and next week I plan on doing my CZ. Here is a link to the site http://www.duracoat-finishes.com/

I have only used the Shake and Spray that comes with everything you need, and you do not need to bake it. They have several models, one that is designed for extreme heat.

I have put so far about 500 rounds through my 1911 that I fully duracoated about three weeks ago and it has so far held up. Only mark is where the upper is slightly rubbing on the frame and it is more of a mild scratch. The original coating that came with the gun scratched to the steel after about 5 shots. So I would say it holds up nicely.

Do some google-fu and you can find some serious duracoat jobs people have done.

I would only add that you need to severely degrease the gun, and in some cases with polymers (like the A2 stock) you have to soak them a little since the oils can leach out of the plastic.

Also, after application, you need to let the parts rest for like a Month before you put them back together for best results. Otherwise all your work will be in vain. Do this and you will have great results.

Letting cure for a long time is good idea, I did however reasble shortly after coating with no issues with the Shake and Spray
