Would someone be so kind as to educate me on this Duracoat thing. Please point me to some reading, or message thread about the subject. I have a firearm that I am not to excited about the lower and this caught my attention.
Duracoat is a firearm finish that you can buy online, and do it yourself in no time. It's like an epoxy, a binary coaing, there are 150ish colors to choose from and you mix in a hardner to the paint, prep the gun, spray it let it dry over night before handling and in about two weeks the finish is fully cured. It's tough, scratch resistant, doest chip or peel, and they claim it is flexible so it can absorb shock and damage increasing it's life. SO far I have done two guns and next week I plan on doing my CZ. Here is a link to the site
http://www.duracoat-finishes.com/I have only used the Shake and Spray that comes with everything you need, and you do not need to bake it. They have several models, one that is designed for extreme heat.
I have put so far about 500 rounds through my 1911 that I fully duracoated about three weeks ago and it has so far held up. Only mark is where the upper is slightly rubbing on the frame and it is more of a mild scratch. The original coating that came with the gun scratched to the steel after about 5 shots. So I would say it holds up nicely.
Do some google-fu and you can find some serious duracoat jobs people have done.
