Thinking about a 1911 in 38 super.

Postby user293 on Thu Nov 24, 2011 10:45 am

Been thinking over the idea of this for sometime now. finally got into my career with good paychecks, and would like to pick up a 1911 for the 100 year thing, but wanna make it a twist with the 38 super variant. I like the caliber and reload for 38 supercomp already for my custom gun. I like the colt XSE but they are hard to find in super. I want a modern style 1911 with dovetail sights, beavertail safety, improved hammer, etc. I know kimber makes a few, and springfield too. any other ideas or concepts? what am i lookin at for prices for a custom springfield job? Pics, ideas, anything appreciated. show me your buys or builds whatever you got. help me pick a winner. local places that have something stocked youve seen or heard? thanks!

Unless you REALLY want a 1911, you can do much better with an EAA 38 Super Match, which with a 22# Wollf recoil spring will digest 9x23 Winchester ammo (running at about 52,000 PSI) just fine. NIB for slightly under $500. Holds 17+1, so it would be a good hicap match gun. Puts a 125 Grain Gold Dot out the front at 1450 fps. If you DO get a 1911, make sure it is a NEW one from the last 5 years or a little more. The old ones had slightly different chamber dimensions so that tiny little semi-rim on the 38 Super case could TRY to properly headspace. With the older 1911 38 Supers this was a hit and miss proposition, and as such accuracy sucked, and the 38 Super languished in the shadows for decades. It wasn't until the IPSC people came along in the mid 80's and started hot rodding 38 Supers with lugged Nowlin barrels using rimless cases that the round took off. Al's Gunshop in WBL normally has some nickled 38 Super 1911's in stock, but they are well over a grand for a gun like that.

Here's the EAA 38 Super Match, and in addition to lower recoil than a 357 Sig because the slide sits so low in your hand, it's a fricking tack driver. My handloads have a velocity standard deviation of only 6 FPS!!

looks like fun sam. i just really love 1911's and their style. id really like to give it a serious go with one of those. i dont really dig the older Gvt 1911's. i really like the modern style. but that EAA could likely change my perception a bit. i do like accuracy and velocity combined.

Plus in addition to being a gun that Tanfoglio set up specifically for USPSA rules so it's good to go right out of the box (Hence the name "Match"), an 18 shot semi-auto with a DA/SA trigger with very good ergonomics and full 357 Magnum 125 grain JHP power, it would make one hell of a carry gun. It's also very concealable with an IWB holster. Dunno if you can buy one comercially, but Srigs will make you up a really good one for a competitive price. When you dump a full mag downrange, your brain starts to go "when is this EFFEN piece finally gonna run dry"???

Oh, I live in Afton, about 6 minutes away from Oakdale Gun Club, and I'm a member.

Dislike colts older 1911 but i dig newer sprigers i like. Ill consider a kimber and colt. All just hard to find in super. Maybe a custom line thats not full blown top of the line. Stuff like that but im lookin for ideas. Basically new 1911 in super

What do you want to spend?

Baer will make 38 supers...

Since you already shoot USPSA, and a good 5 or 6 carloads of Minnesotans go to Single Stack Nationals every year, I'd think hard about a 45 or 40, but I am sure it won't be the last 1911 you buy.

Well, I can pretty much guarantee that Al in Al's gun shop in WBL with have a couple of nickeled or chromed "El Jefe Supremes" in his case in 38 Super, so you can at least see one. Never been in there and NOT seen one of those 38 Super 1911's in there. Dunno why he always keeps them in stock, but he does, and knows a fair amount about their history. Actually, he knows a lot about 1911's period.

I wake up in the middle of the night, have a glass of wine, and then can go back to sleep again... Seeing as I live alone, I can pretty much do anything I want

I dont really wanna spend more than 1500. Thats max. Ideally i want to spend closer to a grand. Im not really into the shiny nickel, but more into stainless or hardchrome, or two tone. Im shooting open now in USPSA so ill be there for a few years. Les baer is probably out of my price range. Seen a few kimber stainless targets on gunbroker for 1000 and a few colt XSEs for little under 1000. Im kinda holding out for someone to sell a springer in super thats affordable. But maybe theres more options than those 3.

ok Sam or anyone else whos paying attention, how bout this. I buy a Springfield loaded target stainless in 9mm (or just a loaded). its a sharp looking gun. i take the 9mm Bbl and get it machined to run 38 super. will that work out or are there hidden problems behind this? besides the slide will lie and say 9mm when its a super. maybe i can just call springfield and ask them to build me a loaded stainless in super. hopefully wont be too expensive. anybody ever do any of this?
