bad XD mags?

Postby grousemaster on Fri Dec 02, 2011 9:17 am

So I picked up an XD45 yesterday, it's my first XD. I noticed right away that neither mag drops free when I depress the mag release. Love the pistol, but this doesn't seem right. After looking around XDtalk I noticed others have had the same problem and Springfield has replaced them. So I called Springfield this morning, and they want me to send both the mags back for inspection (at my expense) and then they will replace them if found defective. In the meantime I'll be without mags. Also, the mags rattle when fully loaded. With decent mags this seems like a badass pistol.

Doesn't seem like a very good solution.

A semi-auto gun is only as good as it's worst performing magazine.

Let us know how it turns out.

I've heard there are newer XD mags that have the Springer logo and are more matte instead of shiny. Both mine are the old ones. I was kinda hoping they would send me a prepaid shipping label or just send me mags without me having to be "mag-less" for a couple weeks. I may call and beg for them to do this...maybe I'll tell them it's my only pistol and I don't want to be unarmed in my dangerous neighborhood for two weeks :D

The real trouble is you only have 2 mags to start with. Go buy three more, then you can send your two in without being unarmed. When SA sends you two new replacements you'll be up to 5. Then go buy 2-3 more and you'll almost have enough. ;)

Did you buy it new? Maybe you could beg them to let you in on the 3 free mags promo that ended on 11/30?

I did not buy it new. I'm hoping they're not gonna snub me simply because I didn't buy it new. I've heard they pay the shipping and replace mags no questions asked....they're not giving me that kind of service :x

The real trouble is these mags are defective. It's not that I don't have enough mags. If this is how the XD mags perform I'm not sure I want to drop $100 on 3 more of them.

the mags have the slightest bulge behind where the top round sits. I hear this isn't uncommon with the 45 ACP mags. Well, according to Xdtalk anyway

I'm definitely gonna get more....I'm just a little put out that I have to run out and do it right away. First I'll try the angle of being "unarmed" with Springfield. If that doesn't work I'll buy another to keep around while these ones are in transit.

Guess I can't speak personally of the XD .45 mags, but I can say I've never had a single problem with any of the 11 XDm mags I have in .40.

Have no issues with my 17 XDM 9mm mags dropping but sometimes when loaded full a few have rattled. I found a round was loose in there near the bottom and would rattle. Didn't seem to have any performance impact.

All of my XDs are 9mm and I've never had an issue. But the do all rattle when fully loaded.
I've never had to deal with SAs customer service, so I don't know how they handle second owners.
Did you but from a dealer? If you did ku might ask them to contact their SA rep.

Check this area on your magazines, you may find as I did, that the magazine kinda bulges here and that's what causes them to not drop free. I fixed mine, probably temporarily, by adjusting them with a tool appropriate to the job. I think I may have used a light hammer and possibly a pliers, YOU do what you think is right :D

I did have an XD 9mm, in fact I had two, both gone now but never any problems with the 9mm magazines. I have seen the magazine problems with three different, and older, XD 45's.

The rattle is normal and is a result of the double stack.

When the XD came out there were problems with the magazines doing what you describe because they bulged a bit. My understanding is that new mags are being made that are stronger and don't have that issue.

With regard to Springfield service, you might want to call again at a different time of day and see if you can get a different person that will cover the shipping for you.

Thanks for the input guys. I went up to Streichers and picked up another XD45 mag. Guess what? It drops free and looks different. It has a duller finish and the Springer logo. It drops out smooth as silk. My mags do indeed have the bulge shown in the picture above. Apparently Springfield had to change the mags...but I guess it's not a "recall" ? Who knows. Rather than pounding these mags straight, I'll just send them back for some good ones.

I called back and talked to a different guy. He told me that returns/exchanges generally take 2-4 weeks. So I offered to pay for the new mags up front so long as they are shipped right away and my credit card is credited after they receive my return of the bad mags. They agreed and my new mags are on the way.

The new guy also sent me a Fedex label so the return of the bad mags isn't on my dime.

+1 Springfield customer service, thanks for the suggestions gentleman.

Okay, so now a new problem. The new mag doesn't want to come out when loaded...it literally takes a couple thumbs and LOTS of pressure to eject a loaded magazine with the new mag I JUST BOUGHT.

WTF? Old mags won't drop free when empty, new mags won't drop at all when full.

EDIT: Okay, so I've been constantly putting in new mag and ejecting it. It is getting a little easier, but it's still a pain. Seems you have to use the tip of your thumb instead of the pad of your thumb to get enough leverage on it. But, it's getting looser as I do it more. I guess that's better than accidentally dropping out a mag in the heat of the moment....can't wait to put some of the $12.99 a box herters ammo through it today I picked up at Cabelas

BTW, my new mag DOES NOT RATTLE AT ALL.

So I would say it's not normal for these mags to rattle. It doesn't make sense to carry extra mags around that rattle....it could give your position away, and is flat out annoying.
