My new GP100

Postby JeffD on Sun Feb 05, 2012 7:54 pm

So I just picked up a GP100. I have had a 357 on my list for a while and a good deal came along. This is my first 357 and I was wondering if there are any mods that make this gun better? Should I get a trigger job/kit? I do want to upgrade the sights with something a little more visible. This is my second wheel gun and my first new one. My other is a S&W 44 mag. :D Should I dry fire this a bit to loosen up the trigger? Any input or opinions are welcome.

A friend of my mom won it in a raffle and he didn't want a handgun. They offered my a cash payout that was stupid low. He offered me the gun for a great deal. It is a blued 6" model. I have not fired it yet, but I can't wait!

My new GP100

Ruger sells front sights (hi-vis if I remember right) and they are super easy to install.

I dry fire the heck out of mine and it helps. I have three GPs two with Wilson springs and one with wolfe. Both are great springs and will lighten the trigger a lot. I have had trigger jobs on all of them and it helps, but shooting them will also help a lot.

I second the recommendation for the HiViz fiber optic front sight. The factory front ramp sight on the GP100 is a bad joke as it is nigh invisible against a dark background/target.

The HiViz sight is available directly from Ruger for $35 (plus postage), or you can get it from Amazon.com (here) for a little over $28 with free shipping.

The hammer/trigger spring kit mentioned in a previous post also does wonders for improving the trigger pull.

You bring the beer and I'll bring the gun!

I completely agree on the front sight. My HiViz upgrade did wonders. And yes, dry fire it like mad, but a nice trigger job will make it shoot like a way more expensive gun. I absolutely love my GP100, welcome aboard! :-)

If you go with lighter springs, just be sure to test it with different brands of ammo. I went with the lightest spring from a Wilson kit on my SP101 and one day after a couple hundreds rounds without a problem started getting occasional light strikes. Switched up to the second-lightest spring and haven't had a problem since, and it's been a few years.
