Is 18 min age to purchase handgun in MN?

Postby gopherfan6969 on Thu Mar 15, 2012 6:41 pm

permit to purchase says:

The following restrictions apply to the possession of firearms, to transferee permits, and reports of transfer for handguns and semiautomatic military-style assault weapons.
• Must be at least 18 years old to purchase a handgun or semiautomatic military-style assault weapons from a licensed dealer, and under federal law must be at least 21 years old to acquire handguns from licensed dealers.

Thats kind of confusing in my opinion. Does that mean 18 in MN but 21 to purchase from out of state?

Thanks,

Gander Mountain says 21 but is it different for private sales?

Long story short, 21 to buy from an FFL, 18 from private party.

Yes, a google search was the first thing I did. That first link is from 1999, the second says you can be 18 and buy a handgun which is apparently wrong if you want to walk into Gander or Fleet Farm and get one, the third has nothing to do with the question, the fourth is a bunch of yahoo's. I guess I was hoping for some reliable information from people who would know. Thanks for your help.

Problem is finding a private party who will sell to an 18 year old. Helps to get your PTP but that can sometimes be tough too.

18 yrs old- no handgun from an FFL but technically an assault style rifle is legal. Not sure how you would do this though. Someone under 21 posted on here once before that he/she was able to get a PTP for assault style rifles but no handguns. Again, I don't know how, you'd have to do some searching/asking. Good luck.

Person to person is a different deal, 18 and up you can purchase private party legally, but as said before, good luck finding someone who is willing. I'd do it but only under certain circumstances. I won't sell a handgun or AR style rifle to someone I don't know and trust.

It's quite simple really. You just need to be 18 to buy a pistol or "Assault style" rifle. Simple enough. Statewide, you can buy a pistol and or "assault rifle" privately or from a dealer as long as you are 18. HOWEVER, due to the federal law in place, you need to be 21 to buy a handgun from a DEALER. Because federal law naturally supercedes the state law, 18 to buy privately, 21 to buy over the counter when it comes to handguns. Easy enough.

I ran into that problem getting my PtP. I'm only 20, so I got a nice note on mine saying "For authorized military-style assault rifles only."

Since I wanted to buy an Arsenal SGL-21, I needed to get a permit to purchase. Fun thing is, the state calls it a permit to purchase a handgun, or something like that. You can quickly see how the problem presented itself to me.

i remember when i was 19 or so and i went to cabelas one day. a Dad with two sons around my age at the time (not 21 yet) were talking about how to purchase and AR-15. the guy behind the counter said "you need to be 21 with a permit to purchase to buy this" i overheard and said, you actually only need to be 21 for handguns, you can get a permit to purchase assault style firearms when you are 18. the guy argued and said hes never heard that, and said they wouldnt sell any AR rifle to anyone under 21, permit or not. people in that Dept need some facts.

^That right there.^

I didn't buy my first pistol until I was 24, oh well.

As far as the long guns that are considered in Minnesota to be "assault weapons" I just go over to Wisconsin and buy them as regular long guns. I find that whole "assault weapon" restriction silly.
