Bersa Thunder?

Postby XD/Dale on Sun Mar 25, 2012 3:57 pm

Anybody have a Bersa Thunder if so how do you like it? My wife looked at one with wrap around grips with finger grooves she really liked it.

Bersa Thunder?

Heaviest of sighs. I had the .380 with crimson trace laser grip.
Too bad it piped and jammed more than it fired. Had the same trouble with my Walther .380, which I sold to get the Bersa. If fired it clean, dirty, wet, dry, assorted ammo. I give up...young back to the 9mm XD-SC for summer carry.

When I went to my gun shop looking for 380's the Bersa was on my radar. I always like to ask the guys behind the counter if they had heard or seen anything about the gun's when I'm looking. Shops who sell guns usually also smith them and when I asked about the Bersa, the guy said he had seen a lot of them back in the store for repairs/issues.

I'm sure there are a lot of Bersa's that work just fine but in a defense situation, I wouldn't go with a pistol that sees more problems than other options I have. Yeah, they're cheap and they likely USUALLY work fine but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Have her check out the Ruger LCR .38 or maybe a Smith and Wesson Bodyguard in either model (.38 or .380). I personally would go with a Sig P238 but I'm also used to single action. The Ruger is a reliable, hassle-free, light option though. You pull the trigger and it goes bang every time. It's what I'm having my mom get. Image

LCR's and Bodyguard's both have options for attached lasers also if that's something that interests her.

No plumber's crack issues? :?
I spend several hours a day in a car and would think a SOB would be very uncomfortable while driving.

i've had the 9mm bersa hc and UC, they were fine weapons. i still own a bersa thunder 380. hundreds of rounds thru it without a hiccup. the hc and uc, didn't have any issues either. i traded them away when i realized that they just were not right for me for carry.

I see the link to my thread was posted already. I haven't shot mine in a few months. I daily carry a Kel Tec PF9 now.

She liked the S&W revolvers, the only thing she liked about the bodyguard we looked at was that it had a laser.

I have a duo-tone Bersa Thunder 380 that I purchased from (gasp!) Gander Mountain some years ago, when they actually had decent prices on guns.

For the (then) price, it was a well built and reliable firearm with a very good trigger (after the silly magazine safety was removed). And for a short-barrelled sub-compact gun, it shoots surprisingly tight groups with both commercial rounds and my handloads (sub-3" groups at 20 yards). Unfortunately, those groups are centered about 10" below the POA, and the rear sights lack an elevation adjustment.

My good friend purchased a Bersa Thunder 380 not long after I acquired mine, and his shoots about 4" under the POA at 10 yards; he's currently using it as his carry gun.
