Contender needs work

Postby Sigfan220 on Fri Oct 19, 2012 8:41 am

I have an older contender fram I am using with a new barrel. The action sticks now and is a bastard to open. The interwebs sugest this is somewhat normal and can be fixed with a good stone. I don't feel like stripping the frame down right now. Has anyone performed this stoning operation or can recommend a gun smith that works with contenders? I love shooting it but it is a bit sticky right now.

Thanks!

I assume sticky when you open and close with an empty chamber.

Have seen where an older frame and factory barrel will work fine, then a custom barrel that has a bit of a tight or rough chamber is fired and the action sticks when opening.

Just askin....

It's only hard to open. Loaded or not but harder when shot. It is a newer factory barrel 7x30w.

Is the frame also a newer one? When newer barrels are installed on older frames this can happen.

New barrel old frame. I think the internals are bent. The frame even when the barrel is off is hard to actuate the lever. Plus it makes terrible noises even when the barrel is off, not good.

My current plan is to bring it to Bills and have the smith take a look.

I got it back from Bills. The smith said some part of the frame came loose and needed adjustment(whatever the part is behind the case, on the frame). He also polished the locking lugs or something. Total was $20, about 1/5th of what I expected to pay. I primed some brass last night and still need to load some, but so far it looks/feels much better.

I'd say that is a fair charge, from an honest 'smith. Good on both o' ya.

I took it out for the first time since the repair. Everything worked great. Man is that thing accurate. Even the fire form loads shot great.
