Help me decide

Postby Evad on Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:12 pm

This makes no sense what I want...so a little background.

I have a Glock 27 that I got for carry, and never got around to getting my permit (soon). I also have a Ruger P95 that I LOVE for what it is. It's comfortable and fairly cheap to shoot. I want something new...no reason other than "want". I am torn.

Part of me wants something like an LC9/PM9/P11. The P11 is my least likely candidate. Part of me wants a 1911. Part of me wants a Glock 19.

So, I get a more carry friendly 9mm, or a 1911 is where it really boils down to when you put the G19 into carry friendly. Since I have the G27...I think that seems silly. Since I have the P95, something 9mm range friendly seems silly. If I did a 1911, it wouldn't be crazy. Any of my choices should be in the $500 range or so.

About me:
I am very rusty since life has kept me away from practice for years. I am going to get my permit soon, but I don't think I would carry until I feel a little less rusty. I have a couple holsters for the G27. Since I haven't done it outside the house, I can't tell if it will feel big to carry. So maybe I should wait and see if I want a smaller carry piece...but if that happens the G27 is a bit worthless to me since it isn't very fun at the range. So maybe I should get the 1911 and if I get something smaller I will buy it with the proceeds from the G27.

The above is in addition to me wanting a 22LR handgun. I am thinking something like this:

Another question from my lack of experience. If an FFL asys "$x for up to 5 transfers", do they all need to be from the same purchase and the same vendor? Or can it be three different sales that all come to the FFL for one sit down and transfer?

So, hit me. Give me your opinion. Brutal honesty is welcomed.

Advice: we all want a thousand different guns. Welcome to firearm enthusiasm.

Make your priority list based on your needs and wants. Nobody else can determine your priorities for you.

Lastly, if you want the best chance of obtaining a great example of a particular platform, $500 1911's is a tough place to start to the untrained eye. Lots of unhappy first time JMB fans follow.

I like it. Reminds me of my first gun...that I NEVER should have let my dad steal back from me.

You mentioned a Glock 19 and that your G27 is not fun at the range and that you want a .22...

How about trade the G27 off for a 19 and get a .22 conversion? The 19 is fun to shoot at the range in 9mm and with a .22 conversion you would get even more practice with your potential carry gun? I carry a 19 every day and used to have a 26; the 19 is 98% as easy to carry.

You can do the same thing with a 1911 BTW.

Get the 19. It will end up replacing your 27 and P95. You need to practice with your carry gun. The 19 will make that much easier.

I don't believe an FFL can legally transfer that to you in Minnesota. IIRC the use of Chiappalloy makes it an SNS.
Ruger 22/45, S&W 22A and Browning Buckmark will all treat you right. For something a bit larger caliber I would recommend the Kahr. It operates almost the same as the Glock that you are already familiar with.

Help me decide

If I were in your shoes, I would sell or trade the G27 and get the G19. And since you have a hankering for both a 1911 and a .22, a 1911-22 would seem to scratch both itches. At the gun show this weekend there were plenty of the colt/umarex 1911-22's available. I think I saw a couple of the sig 1911-22's as well. Most were under $400. If you decide against the 1911-22, I'd highly recommend a MKIII of some sort. Good luck with your decision! New guns are fun:)

Or he could get a real 1911 and a 22 conversion kit for it and have both. ;)

The good side...no suggestions made me feel crazy :)

I remember the 19 I shot being really comfortable...that idea has a lot of promise for me. I agree with "practice with what you carry", which even though I don't yet carry is how I know the 27 isn't that fun at the range. But, that could be my grip or a number of other things I didn't think about in the past.

A couple questions...

What is an SNS? I am guessing that is why I have seen a couple 1911-22s are not allowed in MN as listed on Bud's.

The 22LR conversion kit on a 1911...how easy is the swap? Is it just drop the slide and replace? I remember looking at 22 conversiona long ago and never really put much in to it. What I really want to know is could I swap out at the range easily? I guess another change is now I can just hit youtube and see. A handful of years ago there wasn't much useful on youtube :)

OK. Talk to me about conversion kits...from experience.

The kimber 1911 kit and the glock kits. I can get a stand alone 22LR to play with at the range for close to the same cost. So, seriously...besides the "same feel", what is the advantage? Would it not be a good idea to practice with a couple different feels to be relatively compentent with them? I am not expecting to ever shoot in competition, I just want to be able to hit my target. School me. Tell me why besides a $50-$100 savings I would care to shoot 22LR out of a "real" 1911 or glock vs a copy.

Oh...and skip the "how easy to swap" questions thanks to youtube.
