First Pistol

Postby Just Another Gun on Sun Dec 23, 2012 10:27 am

Hi there, new to the pistol ownership side of guns, I have quite a few rifles, and a couple shot guns, but decided to go get a pistol after having a fun outing with a few friends and using theirs.

I bought myself an M&P .40. I really like the gun, shoots really nice, and after having run only 100 rounds through it I am doing quite well with the accuracy.

I have plans on getting my conceal and carry, but I have one main question, which I did not this of when I purchased my gun. I mistakingly got a pistol that does not have a built in safety on it. Now will that be an issue when it comes to carrying this gun? Is a safety required on a carry pistol?

Or is there something else that is required should you not have a safety built onto the gun?

Thanks for the help folks, hope I can learn some more about all of my toys.

I'm not familiar with your gun, but the most popular handgun in the world, a Glock, has no manual safety.
Any safe holster will completely cover the trigger.
Personally, I like the XDs, as they have a grip safety, as well as the trigger safety- both passive, and effective.
Someone else will shortly chime in regarding ''conceal and carry permits',

And lastly, Welcome
....and there's this:

Before it gets you smacked down by some semantics do gooder MN does not require concealed so it is not a conceal and carry permit here, just carry. Kind of like the 'it isn't a clip it's a magazine guys".

Welcome to the forum! You may want to include an introduction over on the "Introductions" page. Glad you're enjoying your M&P! I have one in 9mm and I really like it. Firt off, in MN its a carry permit, not a "concealed carry". And secondly, your weapon does not need to have an external safety in order for you to use it as your carry weapon. There are a lot of great carry permit instructors here at mnguntalk. I went through Blue Line Defense (Paul is a moderator here) and did some follow on training with Tactical Training Solutions (Craig is a board memeber here), and I highly recommend both, but there are a lot of instructors to choose from.

No, a manual safety is not required to carry your pistol. In addition your M&P has a number of passive safeties, just like a gun with a manual safety, if you pull the trigger it will fire.

I prefer a carry gun with no safety at all. I carry a p-32 and cw9. As stated your holster will cover the trigger.

Wow, that was quick, thanks for all of teh replies guys!

So now my permit to "carry", I do a lot of travelling, mostly from MN over to Washington state, and I have mane places I like to stay in between, so having a permit that allows me to do so in all of the midwest, west, and northwestern states would be nice, I will likely be trying to find a class mid to late summer next year, once my fiance is done with college so I can afford to pay for stuff again.

Supporting two people with car payments, house payment and gas on one income isn't doing so well, hello credit card debt :)

Good thing she is getting a little extra money from school loans, and hopefully our taxes wills be good this year.

Anywho I will gladly post in the intro forum to say hello to everyone.

Regarding other state reciprocity:
It's something one needs to stay on top of, as the various agreements between states can and do change.
http://www.handgunlaw.us is a popular and trusted spot for such information.
You'll likely need some other state's non-resident permits to do extensive travel while caring.
Some useful and popular ones are Florida, Utah and Arizona; individually, or collectively.

In comment to the OP's (Original Poster) first comments... I remind people all the time that the biggest safety on ANY gun is your finger off the trigger... Glock's and every revolver I've ever handled do not have safeties... if you don't put your finger on the trigger it's nearly impossible for a handgun to go off without your finger being on the trigger.

Enjoy your new handgun.
