Help with cleaning a Kimber.

Postby KimberJoe on Thu Jul 24, 2008 1:18 pm

I recently bought a used Kimber PRO TLE II and it didn't come with a rod to take it apart. Is there something else I can use until my disassembly rod shows up in the mail?

I've put too many rounds through it to not tear it down for a proper cleaning.

What is a disassembly rod? Are you sure you have a 1911 there? ;)

I own 2 standard Colts and they tear down without any "tools", this being my first Kimber, and used, it came without a manual. I looked it up on the net and it says I need a rod to hold the slide back for disassembly. There is a hole in the
guide rod for it.

I was wondering if any of the Kimber owners here had used other things to get it apart in a pinch.

Paper clip. Works well for me!! :D just straighten it out, and put a 90 degree bend in the last 1/4 inch.

Thanks, I thought about that but thought it might be too weak and I'd end up with a chunk of paperclip wedged in it.

Good to know it works. :D

Small Allen wrench, that's what it looks like, just round.

No issue with bending, the tolerances are too tight. as long as the clip is a smaller diameter than the hole, it will work well.

I have used just about anything that will fit in the hole.

I have a few spares if you need one. I called Kimber and they sent me 3 or 4 spares (I knew I was going to loose them, and as yet have not.

I didn't really lose them, just not sure which drawer I put them in. Anyway, a have both metric and standard allen wrenches on the bench and use them.

Yeah, I explained to the lower half, that the takedown tool was VERY important, and to be careful not to lose it. 10 minutes later, I lost the damn thing. Luckily I have a whole drawer full of paper clips. I wonder how many requests Kimber receives daily for replacements :hmm:

Probably a bunch.

They sent me several taped to a piece of cardboard. It looked like a premade package like someone made a bunch adn put them in manila envelopes ready to send.

Well I have so far managed not to loose any so if anyone needs one I have a spare.
