Walther P22

Postby Devious Delight on Tue Feb 19, 2013 7:18 pm

Over in the for sale section, someone noted that their Walther P22 wasn't very suitable for new/inexperienced shooters.

Opinions on this?

Background:
I'm new to guns, shot a cz75b stainless down at gander a few weeks ago. ordered one after completing my ccw class, and am awaiting my permit to arrive. Could be months before the gun does. (may or may not pick up something before hand, but with ammo near impossible to find, maybe not)

Sending my wife to get her ccw as well. We will also be taking a few handgun safety courses, as well as tactical courses and at least monthly trips to the range.

The reason I ask, we stopped at Gander, so she could start handling some guns. She liked the Walther PPK.

I was thinking of getting it in a .22 for range use, to help her get really comfortable with it, and having a PPK (.380) for her daily carry (when she chooses to/does) and nightstand gun. Most reviews and my research suggest the two weapons will quite similarly, with the .380 having a little more kick.

Opinions/comments/complaints about my logic?

I say get it, especially if her carry gun is going to be a ppk. I cannot think of why it would not be suitable for new shooters. I've only shot one once, but from what I remember it was a fun little gun.

I have heard they have reliability issues though.

A .22LR pistol is a great way to shoot alot for alot less. I own both a Ruger MKIII 22/45, and a Smith and Wesson M&P22. Both great guns.

I highly recommend a P22 for a new shooter! Cheap ammo even in this panic, very low recoil which makes it highly controlable and it controls just like the big boys for the most part and they are a fun lil gun to shoot.

I picked one up earlier today and hope to get to the range within the next couple of days. After I throw some rounds thru it, I'll give you my opinion on how things went. It feels pretty solid in my hand and can't wait to shoot it, pretty sure it's going to be a blast!

I have a P22 and it's "ok". Fussy about ammo though. Does not like Federal bulk...Jams more than MC5, but likes Rem Goldens (wtf?), CCI mini mags. The build quality is nothing to crow about. The slide is cheapish and showing lots of wear. I have about 3,000 rounds through it so far. My wife likes the feel of this one. Smaller sized.

I have a S&W 21 that I LOVE. Shoots any ammo you can find. Federal, Win, Rem etc. This is a full size pistol. Along the likes of the Browning Buckmark and Ruger Mark models. The S&W is a breeze to break down for cleaning. It reminds me alot of my dads Hi Standard pistol. About 7,000 rounds through this one.

Grab what feels good...uh I mean purchase what fits your hand well and "go for it"! :D

Yea, no way I'd buy a P22 with the SR22 out. Walther doesn't even make the P22, Umarex does. I think it has a low grade metal slide to...like a pot metal of some sort? I could be wrong.

You are correct GM. The pistol is made by Umarex and the slide is made of some mystery metal.

I've been reading about troubles with the Ruger SR22s also. (broken take down lever, slide issues) Bummer because I was hoping to get one to replace my p22.

She liked the ppk/s.22, which I think Walther does make.

I was thinking the p22 for myself, but I'm not into buying shoddy quality products. Thought's on the M&P22?

Have you looked at the Sig Mosquito? Seems like a decent firearm, though I don't have any first hand experience.

I've thought about it. Maybe I should be asking for more general opinions...

I do have a thing for German made items though.

It's the same as the ATI one, but more expensive. Made by the same company too I believe.
