Had a moment of weakness...

Postby justinvan on Mon Apr 01, 2013 6:26 pm

Was on my way home from work and found one I could not walk away from....ened up being the new owner of a Colt Delta Elite 10mm in Stainless. Local fun shop had a used unfired model sitting in the case at a price I couldnt walk away from. Is there anything I should know about these guns? What is some of the better 10mm ammo out there? I want to shoot some of the real stuff not this watered down ammo they label as 10mm. Do I need to worry about running the hotter stuff in this gun?

Well, I'm not the resident expert, but I think that the vaste majority of 10mm ammo (other than Buffalo Bore and maybe a couple other "custom" ammo makers) is pretty weak compared to the potential of the caliber. I have never bought any factory ammo in 10mm so I am just repeating what I have heard.

I reload all mine so I can control what I want in terms of performance. I wouldn't worry about running anything within spec in that gun. I have a DW Sportsman and that takes anything I can give it.

Underwood Ammo is good stuff, and they make loads specifically for the Delta Elite.

Cor-Bon is always stout. I have a couple buddies Delta Elites and they can bark with a nice custom load.

Original Norma ammo for the 10mm was spec'ed at 200 grs. @ 1200 FPS. Most of the watered down crap out there is 180 @ 1035 FPS, which is 50 FPS faster that 40 S&W spec, as opposed to the 180 gr. @ 1300 FPS that a 10mm SHOULD be. The good stuff includes CorBon, DoubleTap, and Buffalo Bore. IMHO, avoid the stuff with the 200 grain @ 1300 FPS spec!! (Can't remember the brand...) It has a disclaimer similar to shooting Major Power factor 38 Super Ammo in a normal gun, and some stuff about ramped or custom barrels.

If it cycles the weaker stuff, I'd have an "extra power" recoil spring handy, if ya ever wanna shoot the hot stuff!

Ya'll know the spring ain't strong 'nuff fer yer loads, when yer slide starts sticking ... fer no apparent reason! ;)

Oh ... and if ya don't reload ... now's a good time, to start! :?

Mine runs fine on everything I've put in it for 28 years. It did need some break-in time.
