New Remington 1911R1 shoots about two feet low.

Postby peckerhead on Thu May 02, 2013 10:16 am

I took my new 1911R1 out to put a few rounds through it last weekend. I had trouble getting them on paper at 10 yards (inaccurate and low), and all I could do at 30 yards was shoot holes in the dirt under my target. I made sure nothing was loose, then had my friend try it. He shot the same hole in the ground that I did, so I was pretty sure it wasn't user error.

Remington has agreed to make repairs, as well as refinish it (the finish is paper thin and already bright around the edges). I'm glad they're standing behind it, but it's a little disappointing. If they're refinishing it, I doubt I'll see that one back for awhile.

Anyone see anything like this before with the R1?

It's an easy fix. Odds are they mismatched a sight set. Easy swap in and out.

I wasn't exaggerating...it shoots one to two FEET low at that distance. I was forced to look down the side of the slide to get a feel for where the target was. New sights won't fix that, unless I'm missing something.

I'm sure the sights are at least partly to blame!

... could also be a long link?! ... got any brass ya know was fired from it?! ... check if the primer strike is centered!

My 1911 shot about a foot low at 20 feet....doesn't anymore. Sure it's not a problem with the indian, instead of the arrow? :D

Just put your target on the ground where you're bullets are hitting. Problem fixed.
Seriously, hope it's taken care of soon.

I understand why you would think the sights are an issue, but I had to hold over so much that I couldn't even see the target over the slide anymore. My uneducated opinion is that it wasn't built right.

I did everything but save some brass :-(

I'm also a Glock fan. My 1911 is really growing on me.

You just need a higher or adjustable rear or a lower front sight, if it's that bad new I'd let Remington fix it.

I hate to say it, but you're demonstrating the problems with the difference in grip angle between the two platforms, to a certain extent.

I have a tendency to shoot high with my Glocks. I do better with my 1911...

Sorry guys, but if I have to hold over so high at 30 yards that I need to look down the side of the slide to see where I'm hitting, there's something very wrong with the pistol that has nothing at all to do with the sights or grip angle.

I didn't experience this issue with my XD45, my Beretta 92, or my friends Taurus 45 and S&W .38. My friend (the Taurus owner) tried the R1, and had the same problem. The pistol was checked for loose parts. I tried two different kinds of factory ammo, and two magazines.

IMHO - Your best bet is to get it back to Remington for a run through. Sounds like a build problem. If you happened to know a Gunsmith to have them take a look at it before sending it, in case it something simple - maybe worth the effort so you aren't parted from your weapon for who knows how long.
