single action revolvers

Postby Spartan on Sat Jun 29, 2013 12:20 pm

SASS : I am looking to begin shooting duelist or at least in a duelist -style category. I have a problem.. my thumb is too short to reach the hammer on my Ruger Vaqueros..... I am changing hammers to super Blackhawk style but I suspect it'll still be a little tall .......

I ordered a pair of uberti bisleys-gripped pistols but it seems like a dramatic expense when I have several fine six shooters already......

anybody have any opinions? or any experience doing the same or any gunsmithing expertize to offer?

FYI: I just got a Chinese copy of a "97 shotgun.... and action work is done.... wow! Its quite a bit more rugged than the real '97s I have!

I've got a grinder that could fix that for ya.

I'm not sure welding new material onto a hammer would be a good idea from the stress fracture standpoint (admittedly, this isn't a life and death mission critical weapon, but I tend to avoid improper techniques). The face and sear surfaces should be at a minimum case hardened, so welding could negatively affect your case as well. Cutting a new one is always an option, and then having it treated. Someone with a wire EDM could do this pretty easily once the hammer was drawn up in CAD (the file might be available already somewhere on the web).

I've seen "gunfighter" style hammers for SA revolvers. Can't remember where but they should be available.

ETA: I did a little quick looking and it seems that the super Blackhawk hammer is a drop in for the Vaquero and a little lower. Check Brownells, from what I was able to find out with quick research they carry Power Custom parts for the Vaquero

another option is what uberti is now apparently calling the "stallion" ... http://www.uberti.com/firearms/stallion-bisley-and-cattleman-bird-head.php ... #349870

... they used to make a few different centerfire models

I suspect, fer duelist, ya'd like them quite well!

I don't recollect ya havin particularly small hands ... did ya get yer thumbs shortened?! :?

ya'll wanna check the rules ... I'm sure they allow the montado hammer in a Vaquero ... as I believe that's what the SASS models are ... but IIRC, if ya get a bisley hammer, ya best have a bisley grip ... which, would be nother option! ... er, Ruger bisley, that is!

If placing a Brownells order, I can throw it in with my next one for a possible discount. I hope the champion sells quick, and I'll be putting in for another frame/innards when that happens.

I believe I put super blackhawk hammers on my new vaqueros, I am told it is actually lower than bisley. Here is the pic, easy to cock.
