Sig 1911 carry versus Ruger Sr1911 Commander

Postby tazdevil on Fri Nov 01, 2013 3:38 pm

Ok, I can look up the basics, weight (very close), size (also very close), price (not so close). I'm looking for more real comparison's of the two, inherent accuracy, recoil, etc. etc. Or even if the only real difference is price!

The Ruger is more traditional which is appealing to me.
I don't care for the lines on the Sig. The funny slide and the external extractor are deal breakers FOR ME.
I've never shot a Sig 1911 so I don't have any idea how they shoot. I've owned two SR1911's and they were both nice guns.
The other thing about Sig that bothers me is that they make SO MANY models, which IMO opinion makes them harder to value.
I've read something about holster issues due to the cut of the slide.
A two tone Sig exemplifies everything that I HATE to see on a 1911.

I have one of the full size Sig 1911's and it is the most reliable 1911 I have ever owned. The odd slide shape makes it more difficult to find holsters, but everything else about the gun makes up for it.

They are both great guns from great companies, you can't go wrong with either. They are within $100 of each other on Budsgunshop.com.

ETA: The Ruger has a number of MIM parts where the Sig does not and the Sig has front strap checkering.

I'm curious how many have you owned? What were/are they? What are you comparing it to?
Not trying to pick a fight, like I said I haven't ever shot one. Just wondering what you mean.

I have owned Springfields, a Colt, Smith and Wesson and a Para.

The Sig has never had a malfunction that wasn't caused by bad ammo or a bad mag and I have about 20K rounds through it.

I looked at that, and they're undercharging (MSRP) for the Sig, and overcharging (MSRP) for the Ruger!

How accurate is each, I've heard differing reports on the Ruger, not much on the Sig. BTW, this is not a two-tone Sig, it's all satin stainless. Both are 4.25 inch barrels.

Check with Larry at the Gunstop. There was a Ruger in the case but I didn't pay attention as to which one.
His prices are typically more than fair. Good luck with your search.

I just received, in the post, the new issue of gun test magazine and what do you know, a full test, review and compare of the commander size 1911's from Sig, Kimber and Ruger. If you can't find a copy let me know. As a recap, the Kimber came first with an A rating, the Sig second with an A- and the Ruger last with an B. Of the pistols mentioned, I only have a full size Sig so can't personally compare them.

I've read some good things about the Sig C3. There was one at Metro Pawn and Arnzens had one too.
Don't know if either are still there.

Not sure? This article from March has the same MSRP as listed on Rugers website.

I own a Sig C3, I use it as my carry .45.

It DID have some failure to feed issues new, and after 500 rounds it still had issues. But after contacting Sig, they had me ship it out next day air, and it was back in less than a week with the problem completely fixed. They polished the feed ramp, rereamed the chamber, and adjusted the extractor. Since then that gun has been flawless..

I carry this gun, so I trust my life (family lives) to it.

I can't personally speak on the Ruger, other than I think its a sexy 1911 that has a place in my safe at some point in time!!!

Then only other 1911 I own is a Springfield Range Officer, and that has about 3000 down range, and never once any type of failure.. So a rock.

Oh, forgot to mention, the Sig has a "squared off" slide, so finding a holster is a challenge sometimes. Personally I had holster custom made by Kelly gun leather out of AZ.. He did a outstanding job.. Took awhile, wasn't cheap, but beautiful work.. If your interested I can take some pics of the holsters.

One other difference that I forgot to mention the Ruger is a Series 70 and the Sig is a Series 80... Much like the external extractor, some love it some hate it.
