Need help with ruger single six

Postby RJWesleyIII on Thu Dec 12, 2013 3:33 pm

Anyone know of a gunsmith near Stillwater? I'm changing out the sights on my ruger single six, and I can't get the front sight screw out. It's so tight, my screwdriver slipped and kinda messed the screw up. I tried heating it up with no luck. Ruger was nice enough to ship me a new screw and no charge :) any help is greatly appreciated.

Bob

Don't use heat unless Red LocTited.
With a good fit of screw driver, use hammer on end of screwdriver to break loose the grip on the threads. Have barrel of revolver supported in padded vise jaws. Hammer will help screwdriver fit. While tapping with hammer, apply pressure to loosen screw.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks old man. I tried with the hammer as well. No luck. That baby is really tight!

Is the screw head in such condition that you could tighten the screw if desired?
Maybe an application of Kroil, and a bit of patience, then try to break it loose by turning in, if it's too damaged to turn out.

Mill the head off the damaged screw,
Remove the front sight,
Use ViseGrip on stem of threads to turn out.

With no tension on screw, it should be easy to remove.

I don't have a mill, and if I try to drill it to remove the head I will probably damage the sight. Here is a pic.

I would recommend using an impact driver. It is a spring loaded driver that spins when you hit it with a hammer. Get a good bit that fits tight in the head. Should knock right out

Where can a guy get a impact driver? It would be nice to have. I'm going to see a gunsmith at noon tomorrow, I'll see if he can get it. I would really hate to damage the original sight.

I got one at an auto parts store, it was maybe $15
It was the only way I would get a screw out that held the front brake rotor in place on my VW

Smith put it in the drill press and drilled the head off. As soon as I get my new front sight screw I'll put the new sights on and post pics. It might be a few weeks as another round of chemo starts on Monday. Thanks for all the replies.
