Ruger 22/45 MKII v MKIII?

Postby onebohemian on Sat Oct 25, 2008 6:49 pm

I'm seriously considering buying a Ruger 22/45 with 5 1/5 inch barrel. Probably just a basic blued model. The newest model, the MKIII, seems to be available everywhere. I've read posts elsewhere in which folks state the MKII was a better gun, but I can't find decent information as to why this might be. Anybody have firsthand knowledge of the true differences--i.e., is the MK II a more robust and better gun than the MK III--or any other advice as to MK II vs. MK III?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

The concerns with the MK III are connected to the magazine disconnect pardon the pun! This can make the reassembly of the gun a PITA!

The disconnect is a answer in search of a problem.

and it causes other issues as well, with many many Mk II's floating around, I would go that way first.

I do not think you can wear out a Ruger standard auto. I have seen some that were incrediblely beat, yet once cleaned, functioned amazingly well, and shot better than anything that uncared for should. So as long as the bore looks fairly bright, I think your perfectly good looking at used ones.

you can remove the mag disconnect. I did it on my last one.

The MK3 also has the ugliest and most obtrusive loaded chamber indicator I have ever seen.

But, if you are likely to put a scope or red dot on it, the MK3 can't be beat for ease of mounting.

I had done the same research, but could not find a MKII... shoot a MKIII and Bill's in Robbinsdale... and then with luck I called GunStop and found they had a very lightly used MKII with only about 3-400 rounds through it... I bought it after looking it over for about 15 minutes... I have put over 1,000 rounds through it in about 3 months... I'm very happy I purchased that instead of the MKIII.

From my understanding they are both very hard to put back together after cleaning... I think the MKIII has a couple extra steps... I still look at the book to be sure I followed the procedures, or else I have to take it apart over and over again before I get it right. There are some great pictures online to help taking them apart and reassembling them.

One final note that I have observed over the last couple months... Remington ammo works best in this pistol, unless I wanted to spend a lot more money for CCI ammo... the Remington mega box at Walmart is a great deal... I had only one fail to fire in my first box of 500, or is it 550. I'm very, very happy I purchased this gun.

Would you post here or PM me what you paid for the MKII at Gun Stop?

Based on the above and what I've read elsewhere, my mind is made up that I'm going to get a MKII.

Thanks.

I went with the MKIII myself. It shoots well, has great sights, and I have never had a problem with it in many thousands of rounds. The magazine disconnect/safety is a non-factor for me. It is not a self-defense gun, and as long as they don't result in issues with how the gun functions, they are features that I rather like having them on a gun I frequently use to introduce newbies to shooting with.

I used to have an MKII with feeding issues.

YMMV

I had a MK II years ago that also had very occasional feeding problems. I gave it to my daughter (who shoots rings around my son-in-law) and they've had no problems. I think it might have been the ammo but I can't recall what I was using two decades ago and can't say for certain what they're using. I liked it a lot then and even better now (when I get to shoot it).

The Frontiersman has some MK3s starting at about $250(which I assume is a good price since it's within $20 of Impact and Buds). I just picked up the 4.5 inch slabsided 22/45 on Friday and put 100 rounds through it without a problem. The mag disconnect is annoying and in my case I think it prevents the magazines from dropping free. Other than that it appears well made and shot well. The shortish barrel resulted in some flash (something to keep in mind). I'll be looking at removing the LCI and mag disconnect when I have some spare time.
