When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.

So somebody walk me through this please? In a "when seconds count" scenario, a person has to enter a PIN on a wristwatch first, before being able to defend themselves with this .22 caliber? Not to mention that some new technologies take a few production models before the bugs get worked out.

On the other hand, I do like the idea of a weapon that can only be fired by the legal owner. Something like the gun used in the Stallone movie "Judge Dreadd". But we're probably quite aways from something like that.

I can't support this concept. Seems to be a huge impediment to self-defense. And I often share my guns with my younger son and others at the range. The IL was bad enough...

We'll if it is the firearm that all LEO's have to have, it would be interesting. "I'm out of my 10 round mags". Bad guy advancing. "Harry is down and out of the fight, I'll grab his ( insert named firearm). Grab, squeeze trigger, "CRAP".

If that were an issue, a given set of watches could be programmed to arm a given set of pistols. It would be simple to set up an entire departments pistols to be enabled by the entire compliment of watches.

This is not the first execution of this thinking. Many years ago there was a ring/ pistol combo that essentially did the same thing.
I've never been too interested in such set ups, so I have no idea how it played out.

And $1400 for the gun and another $400 for the wristwatch for a .22, um I have a feeling that not to many will be paying $1800 for a .22. But then again it is for the children.

I'm pretty sure you need only set the PIN once in the life of the watch, unless one chooses to change it.

Yep, I thought that as well, plus they're calling that amount 'twice that of a Glock'….$900 Glocks? really?

If this becomes widespread it's only a matter of time until thieves/etc.. start wearing RF jammers programmed to effectively disable firearms within household range... not to mention the klugey implementation involving watches, PIN's, batteries that will die at the worst possible moment, etc.. I already have a hard time trusting gun safes with electronic/battery operated locks, can't imagine adding all these additional layers and things to remember under stress into the mix.

Some sort of programmable DNA scanner (allowing you to "whitelist" more than one shooter) built into the handgrip of a pistol with an exceedingly high level of reliability and Aimpoint like battery life seems a lot more practical way to implement this sort of safety system (and still years from cost effective commercial production).

What safety? If they are talking about kids in the home, you can buy a pretty good electronic gun safe and quality gun for less than that setup and be better off.

Ok. It makes this idea only slightly better.

The company is betting that demand for the technology will increase as they spend money on legislators and lobbying efforts to ensure that their technology becomes mandated in state and then federal law, guaranteeing a marketplace for their product as well as lucrative licensing contracts with any manufacturers wishing to sell firearms in the United States.
