Lots of good recommendations here. I'll back what FJ540 said: get a Performance Center S&W. Not only is it more refined than the 'standard' Smith's, under your limited shooting regimen it will appreciate in value - though you may end up going a few bucks over the high end of your spending range for a used gun. New will probably be over $1000.

If you want to pick up a GP100, to me there is no other option than the Match Champion variant - it has all the bells and whistles and is Rugers attempt to break S&W's lock on competition wheelguns.

And finally, the Ruger Blackhawk - or if you think you may ever shoot cowboy action, the Ruger Vaquero. If you don't need double action - they are fine firearms and built like tanks. The Vaquero especially will hold its value well since there are always cowboy shooters looking to get equipment or upgrade from their Italian SAA clones.

I tend to carry S&W revolvers, 640, 642 and 442 but they are small carry guns.

I do love my 3 screw Ruger Blackhawks in 44 mag, 357 and 30 Carb, all of them without the transfer bar conversions. I love the triggers in those.

I don't own one but Oleg Volk has a great S&W large frame, long barrel 22 that I love to shoot. I don't remember the model number.

I have Joel Rs 44 mag snubby Redhawk but that's just for sentimental reasons and the huge flash and bang at the range! :D

Loving my 5" GP100. Got to shoot Oldman's and was hooked. But I bought mine for shooting not showing off. It'll shoot mild 38s like candy or full load 357 and not buck much. It's built to take it. I think the 5" looks the best and it has the best balance for me. Get both, park the Smith in the safe for show n tell, but take the Ruger with you and enjoy a great shooter!

Have both and if I was forced to throw one away I would choose 586 as I like the clearly written warranty of S&W. But both revolvers would be equal until that point.

Did I read that correctly, you're keeping the Ruger GP100.

(It's so easy to twist the result dependent on how we write things.)
In this case, I know he meant for the answer to be to throw the Ruger, but its not what he wrote.

The other factor to consider is; what are you buying it for. Some competitions limit you to a 4" barrel. Hence my need for a 4" and a 6" GP100.

Outside of this forum a buddy suggested Dan Wesson 715, but new is outside my budget... Anybody owns one of those?

Any Dan Wesson would be better than a SW or Ruger. I don't own one in .357 Mag. I do have large frames, also known as Super Mags. If your worried about problems Genny and Keith at DW are able to take care of things.

Well, I am bidding on a new 586 and used 686+. Hopefully I will not win both :)
