Clark Custom 460 Rowland / 45 Super Build

Postby Snowgun on Wed Oct 15, 2014 7:52 pm

So this has been 2 years in the making, mostly due to all the custom specifications I imposed, but I finally got the asskicking single stack homage to the 1911 I wanted and I love it. All for the price of a Nighthawk T3 or Costa.

Clark Custom 460 Rowland (with 45 super threaded conversion barrel)
Parts:
    STI Slide
    Caspian Recon Race Ready Frame
Clark 460 Rowland Barrel with Comp
Clark 45 Super barrel extended to 5.75" for suppressor thread
    STI Grip safety
    Wilson extended Slide stop
    STI Thumb Safety
    EGW tungsten Guide Rod
    STI trigger internals
    Harrison Design Trigger
    VZ Strider G10 Grips
    Dawson Front site
    Caspian Adjustable tactical rear site

Processes:
    Slide accuracy fitting
    throat and polish
    Lower ejection port
    Bevel mag well
custom knurling on front strap and main spring housing
    Trigger job
    Full meltdown and dehorn
Engraving (By the same guy who did President Bush's commemorative Gun)
    Ionbond all parts

This is with my Aimpoint and X5L attached (for giggles)

The thing kicks like a mule even with the comp, my current loads throwing 230g XTP's about 1375 FPS, and 185g XTP's about 1500 FPS.

I'm getting the super barrel threaded for one of these, which was...obtained:

I will attest to this gun's awesomeness, as Snowgun gave me a chance to shoot it last week. The recoil wasn't as bad as I expected! Although the pressure blast to the face was fun.

All right, color me slightly GREEN with envy. Are those ballistics for the 460 Rowland?? I suspect they are, since 45 Super "spec" is a 230 grain @ 1200 FPS. Also, what are you using for powder??

And at 1375 FPS for the big 230 slug, I can imagine the gun kicks like a sumbitch. If you have any friends with high frame rate cameras, you should get some pictures of the muzzle blast.

Oh, and what does the engraving on the slide say? From the spelling I'm going to guess that it comes from 5 or 6 centuries back. I'm going to make a wild guess that it means "Strike for the Lord", but what do I know??

Very cool piece!!! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

It means "Strength from the Soil", the North Dakota state motto. ;)

I'm using AA#7, typically in the 14-15g charge load weight for 230g bullets. I have been reading stuff regarding 800x but I havn't picked some up yet. The biggest issue is OAL that fits into the magazines that doesn't scare me with these charges. Right now I can get about 2-3 in a magazine at the 1.265-1.270" OAL lengths. It's the truncated cones that get me. The FMJ work a little better at these lengths.

I'm playing with an all copper slug, but its so damn long at 200g that i am hitting the powder.

I got some decent performance with the XPB 200g at 13.5g (1325fps). Can only get one in a magazine though. I'm thinking about machining off the top of the bullet a little to get clearance without having to set it back further. I would only loose a grain or two since there is very little copper at the tip. I'm not sure about how it would affect expansion, but copper is an asskicker. :)

Maybe I'm missing something. If you're in Minnesota, what's the deal with the can?
