Replacement sights on a Glock.

Postby Lil' Dog on Sat Feb 07, 2015 12:53 pm

I bought a Glock GEN 4 20 which is a 10 mm auto. I like the gun, but I am thinking about upgrading the sites. I was looking at maybe getting the Trijicon brand, model GL04. There are 3 options available in regards to what color the rear dots come in. They are green, yellow, or orange. The front is green for all options. Is there an advantage to having two set of colors? Is one combo better than the other? I am thinking about using the gun for deer hunting so a lot of situations could be in low light. Or is it all just a matter of personal preference.

I put these Trijicon HD sights on all of my Glocks and like them. I have old eyes and find that the large and bright orange or yellow front sight dot is much easier to acquire when drawing out of the holster and getting quick shots on target. The rear sight on these sight sets have green self luminous inserts as have the front sight. The green self luminous dot in the front sight is set into the center of the large orange or yellow dot and this allows the sights to be used in low light shooting conditions. The rear sight notch on the "HD" sights is a tad wider than normal, that allows for faster sight picture acquisition when getting those quick shots on close range targets.

Remembering that when you're shooting a handgun (or rifle) with open sights your focus should be on the top of the front sight, so the color of the rear sight dots shouldn't be that important when sighting deliberately at a game animal.

Which color front sight to choose ? I have both the yellow and orange on my Glocks and I'm happy with either color.

It's all about personal preference. The concept of having different colors for front and rear sights relates to contrast. The theory is that you maintain high visibility of the sights in all lighting conditions, and you train your mind to seek out the appropriate color (front sight) for aiming. The Trijicon HD sights are larger and draw your attention more to the front sight. The flip-side is that extensive contrast and larger dots have been shown to cause people to aim with the dot and not the top of the front sight. At close range this is inconsequential, but at longer pistol distances like 20-35yds, it's a bigger issue. As is with everything it's a training issue more than anything else.
