Buffer tube on AR pistol

Postby '06Siguy on Wed Apr 01, 2015 11:22 am

Hi, I'm new to building AR's. I'm currently considering building an AR pistol. My question is this... when building an AR pistol, does the buffer tube have to be a "pistol" buffer tube", or can I use any buffer tube I wish. I should be more specific... my question is in regard to the law. Is it legal to use a standard buffer tube?

Thanks

Technically, no. As long as you don't have a loose stock sitting around that can be quickly attached to your "pistol", you can use a standard keyed buffer tube, though many choose to go full on CYA and use pistol buffer tubes.

I recently got a Thordsen pIstol buffer tube cover kit and was surprised to find it only works with a standard carbine tube. I suppose the reason it is kosher with the ATF is because it is bolted in place.

ATF doesn't care which buffer tube you use, as it is not considered a "stock." As said above, just make sure you don't have any stocks floating around "ready to accidentally fall on your pistol."
