Your favorite BUG

Postby Flip on Mon Dec 15, 2008 9:16 pm

I'm assuming many of you carry a backup gun. I'm just curious what your farvorite is and why. Revolver or Semiauto, Caliber, & such all help

Thanks,

I have a LCP that I carry part time as back up and sometimes as primary. It is small, light, easy to hide and is better than being empty handed. Did I mention how light, small and easy to hide it was??? ;)

When I do carry a backup, it is usually my Kahr PM9, a few times my Rohrbaugh.

At the moment, it's a P6. Same manual of arms as my duty pistol, a 226.

To clarify the question:

Are you refering to carrying a second, smaller gun as a "Back Up Gun" in addition to a primary gun or are you asking what single small gun, that do you carry?

I never can remember carrying two guns, a primary and a back-up. "Primary" would be a Kimber 4", 45 ACP. 10 % of the time.

Normal carry gun qualifies as a "Back-Up Gun". 642 / 442 SW, 38 Special, 158 gr lead SWC. 90 % of the time.

But then, you already know that about me cobb.

P6?

Isn't that actually a full size Sig? Not that there is anything wrong with that, bigger is good. But I usually think of a back up as something much smaller than my primary and much more concealable.

A P6 is a little smaller in most dimensions, and a lot thinner in the grip, than a 226. It's bigger than what I'd carry as a backup, but to people who carry big guns as a primary, I can see how a P6 would be considered "little."

Then again I carry a G26 as my only gun, so anything would seem big to me.

I was referring to a second (usually) smaller gun carried in addition to a primary weapon in case the primary has some issue. I guess I had never thought of a BUG as being an additional primary carried at a different time. I thought that then it wouldn't be a BUG (at that time)

The confusion is compounded by the fact that backup guns are specifically intended for "social functions,"—in other words, self-defense applications. Their express purpose is to save your life on some dark, lonely street or parking lot when you've lost your primary handgun........

A true backup gun is normally a high-quality arm, often in an effective man-stopping caliber and is not necessarily small. The term "back up gun" means exactly what it implies -- a gun that can be concealed, meaning also that the physical size and clothing preferences of the wearer influence the issue at least as much as the characteristics of the gun itself.

So, when we get right down to it, a BUG is whatever we wish—as long as we're willing to do whatever we must to conceal it. It can utilize whatever cartridge we want it to—in fact, the more potent it is, within reason, of course, the better!!!!!!

Also, like any semi-auto, it is rather easy to be taken out of battery if engaged in grappling with an assailant.

For a true back-up, I would carry a hammerless revolver of the small variety. In practice, I don't carry one.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Doesnt gripping the cylinder of a revolver basically do the same thing :?:
I also still have a snub revolver but the Keltec just drops into a pocket so much easier I tend to carry it more then the snub. I used to carry a Kimber Pro and a Kimber Ultra CDP BUG then dropped to snub BUG and now finally the Keltec as the BUG.

I can see that this will become a Pro- vs.- Con BUG thread here real quick then deteriorate into horrid thread drift shortly thereafter so stay with me....

I can see carrying a small revolver as a BUG if you already carry a revolver ("the fastest reload is another gun if you choose a revolver as a primary weapon" Credit to P.Sacco one of the best firearms instructors ever...)

BUT a small revolver in and of itself is a nice thing to have even as a primary - most fights are going to startand end with what you have in the gun to begin with and if it goes longer than that - you stuck around too long.... I hate really carrying one gun - 2 is basically 1 too many IMHO.

I do not carry a BUG, I carry a FULL SIZED real gun in a major caliber (and spend LOTS of time training with it) with a reload always and have never felt the need as a civilian to carry a BUG.

BUT if you feel the need to carry aother 18-26ozs. of steel knock your socks off.

I don’t find carrying a gun a pain in the ass. It doesn’t bother me at all, and I normally carry two. A 340 is my go to bug/discreet gun.
