Help.... want a 22lr 1911 ---- what is the meltdown law?

Postby Bigcloud on Thu Mar 17, 2016 8:58 pm

So Ive been looking for a 1911 22lr rail pistol...... not many choices....... GSG / Colt / Ciabbai / browning / Sig. I can't find any others...... So I go to order and Colt.... I'm told Illegal in MN "the meltdown law... go to order a GSG.... its illegal in MN..... Sigs are made by GSG so I suppose they are illegal. Browning are stink'in expensive. I really want a 22lr 1911 pistol with a rail...... any ideas???

Thanks for any input!!!!

A friend of mine has a sig bought in the last couple years.

Don't know what the meltdown law is.

Schells sells the Sig, I have one. Go to a gun show ( MWCA this weekend at the fairgrounds) can usually find many of the other "Sat night special" 22 LR there also.

2015 Minnesota Statutes

Minnesota Statute 624.712
Subd. 4.
Saturday night special pistol.

"Saturday night special pistol" means a pistol other than an antique firearm or a pistol for which the propelling force is carbon dioxide, air or other vapor, or children's pop guns or toys, having a frame, barrel, cylinder, slide or breechblock:

(1) of any material having a melting point (liquidus) of less than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or

(2) of any material having an ultimate tensile strength of less than 55,000 pounds per square inch, or

(3) of any powdered metal having a density of less than 7.5 grams per cubic centimeter.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but my understanding of the meltdown law as you refer to it has to do with the metallic composition of pistol. Certain low quality metals are associated with cheap "Saturday night special " handguns. The metal is low quality and melts at a relatively low temperature. The ban on low melting pistols is designed to eliminate those cheap weapons that are associated with criminals. Someone will be by with more details.

So...how do polymer frame pistols get by this?

Awful lot of LEOs using these "Saturday night specials"

I may or may not have a Colt gold cup 1911 like this one
Colt Gold Cup w/suppressor

It may or may not have been purchased at Joe's Sporting Goods.

If you're referring to GLOCK pistols, they have a small steel frame with lots of attached plastic gripping surface.

Two feets they come a creepin'
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are lyin' naked
Creeper think he got nothin' to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And while a man reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes

[Chorus]
Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole

Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey
And playing poker on a losin' night
Pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkin'
Somebody been cheatin' and lyin'
So Big Jim commences to fightin'
I wouldn't tell you no lie
And Big Jim done grab his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes

[Chorus]

Hand guns are made for killin'
Ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me

Look at Marvel. I have one and it is extremely accurate.

+1911

If you already have a 1911, adding a quality conversion from Marvel or Nelson will give you a much better quality outcome (and exactly the same trigger pull). Similar design between the two, but Nelson locks the slide back on the last round:

This isn't the reason Glock and other polymer frames are exempt. Polymer can warp, melt, degrade and burn but it can't enter an entirely liquid (liquidus) state as required by law to be prohibited.
