1911 fans please chime in.

I got a 1911 itch I need to scratch. I had a kimber custom carry years again and sold it for the some dumb reason. Well now I would like one again and I am looking for advise. Here's my requirements:
5" barrel
Maybe a rail
black finish

Not overly brand loyal to kimber and thinking about a palmetto state arms.

Let me know your thoughts.

Bought my last two Colt XSE’s at buds. I paid under $800 for the stainless at the time. They have since been discontinued.

I'm a 1911 bigot, so skip the rail. If you want to hang crap on a gun buy a plastic one - they are already ugly.

Also from a looks stand point stick with an internal extractor.

Kimber and Sig would not be on my list, their quality and service has gone to crap over the years.

Springfield would be a nice starting place, if you want to step up through their line and a TRP just ain't pretty enough then a Dan Wesson is very nice.

If you are feeling really generous about art there are a few very good smiths making wonderful 1911's.

But be warned, there are also armies of really bad 1911 smiths that think slide cuts and polish make a firearm great and they have no idea of the true mechanics of a 1911.

If all you looking for a very basic 1911, Ruger, Remington, and a bunch of other folks are branding a entry level gun.

Don't over look the S&w line. Extractor aside, well done 1911s

I would not have a problem with a 5 inch kimber either.

What is the budget and list of must have features? Are you looking for traditional or more modern? Plain or bolder design?

Are you looking to potentially customize it later by a good smith specializing in 1911s? If so, that narrows down your list of choices.

I was curious about PSA guns when they came out but you really do not hear much about them. Because of that I would personally pick a Rock Island over them as they are a proven entry level 1911. Their Citadel line has a bit nicer finish for a few $ more.

After that Springfield, Ruger, Remington and S&W have a huge variety of models under $1000. Entry lever Kimbers are decent too, nothing wrong with that as your first 1911.

My suggestion would be Dan Wesson for bang for your buck. 8-)

I know a few 1911 snobs around here who would have great opinions.

If money is no object, Wilson, Baer, or Nighthawk.

If beauty- try Turnbull.

Otherwise, Springfield, Dan Wesson, maybe Kimber.

Colt has the nice blue finish down, but they are a bit pricey and QC is a bit iffy.

If you really are in for history, get yourself ready to get on the list for a CMP 1911.

As far as "pretty" I dont care a whole ton...sorry 1911 snobs....it has to work before it looks good. The rail is not as much of a must have as I stress it. The budget i would like sub $800. I would like to be able to swap sights later. Otherwise just being able to get repair parts easily is all I care about.

If RIA isn't bad, what do you think of this model

I never have owned an RIA but I would not hesitate based on what I have heard.

Parts wise, if it is a 1911, parts should never be an issue.

Once you cross the $500 mark RIAs start to lose their appeal to me...

For $800 I think you can get a Ruger 1911 with a rail which should be a step up in quality.

Those full length rails make for very soft shooting guns though!

I have many high end 1911s, mostly Nighthawk and Ed Brown. My carry pistol right now is an Ed Brown Kobra Carry. Please take a gander at this pistol; it is absolutely wonderful

I agree that bang for the buck makes DW worth a look. If STI 1911 is as nice as their 2011, I'd vote for them as well. :D

Yeah a lot of the ones you all are mentioning are more than I would care to spend right now.
