The WORST carry pistol?

Postby Flip on Tue Feb 03, 2009 8:54 pm

You always see posts about what's the best carry pistol (and twenty pages of arguments afterwards). So, to think about this a different way, what is the WORST carry pistol for self defense and WHY?

My top votes ...
- The Derringer
- Taurus Model 22 and other small 22 semi-autos
- Glock

Reasons
The capacity of a Derringer is lacking and the small 22 cals don't have much in the way of stopping power or capacity and I'm personally not impressed by the reliability of the small 22's based on personal experience. Glock ... I just put that in there to bug you Glock lovers & give you hard time... I think they're great personal defense weapons but they just don't fit my hand well ... Just to be clear, I'm JOKING about the Glocks ... the others I really don't like

IMHO,

They beat me to it, its the one sitting in your drawer, desk, safe, anywhere but where you need it.

I dont care for any .22 as a carry gun ONLY because the rate of failure to fire can be high, Centerfire is a much better choice, that said, ANY gun is better than most, and if 90% of DGU's are simply displaying a weapon and creating the impression that the cost of messing with the holder is too high to risk, then any gun is again far better.

Besides the already mentioned one you don't have with you I'd add in any gun you can't practically shoot.

For instance a .50 AE is going to be a bad carry gun for most people due to it's size and sheer kick when firing. I wouldn't give my girlfriend my .45 to carry with here unless I put in under loaded ammunition so she could control it. A gun you can't shoot is almost as bad as one you don't have with you.

I might add continuing to carry a gun which you have proven to be less than 100% reliable at the range. No sense in asking for trouble that you can avoid before the fight ever happens. Fix it, get rid of it, whatever it takes, but get something that fires every time without fail if you are willing to bet your life on it.

No problem, everyone knows justacan'thitanything is just angry with guns period.

Last fall we tried to help him, so we loaded a 1911 and a Glock,
taped him inside a refrigerator with the loaded guns,
told him to empty both gun magazines (by shooting the guns)........
he emptied both inside the refrigerator.....
and he failed to hit the refrigerator.............
so you draw your own conclusion......

More familiar to women: The one someone ELSE bought for YOU because it's one you can "handle"

I have a friend who is 120# soaking wet and uncomfortable with a 9mm.. She eats the centers out of targets with a 1911. Let intended owner pick it. Involve them in the decision.

That said: Hi-Point. I've never had one make it through a string of fire without an issue.

Assuming you carry one of course...

The worst have got to be those little derringers that hang around your neck, clipped into a little holster, pointing straight up at your chin.

My vote is for the Taurus Millenium 9mm pistols (original series)
Cheap plastic trigger (no comparison to a Glock plastic trigger)
37 lb trigger pull...Ok, not that bad but it truly is a heavy and truly awful trigger
Broken springs...twice
Poor customer service...wrong replacement spring sent...twice
Magazines rattle

Now I prefer the Glock 19 when it can be concealed and an NAA Guardian .380 for t-shirt and shorts weather.
