I'm far from an expert compared to many hereabouts, but I believe the issue with, not only hollow points, but most any non-ball ammo, is in a stock 1911 platform, and it relates to feed issues due to feed ramp angles, smoothness.. I don't know of other platforms that suffer similar issues as much as 1911s do.

Further, there are those who say 45 ball ammo is the better SD round at the speeds the round enters its target.
I am of the mind that a hot round of ball ammo, with enough steam to exit the far side of a human target is more dependable than a lighter, faster, smaller round designed to expend.
