Favorite Non-1911 Carry in 45?

Postby Flip on Sat Mar 07, 2009 1:00 pm

I had a friend ask me what very good 45 should he consider for carry. Truth is that I don't have experience with 45 but several pop into mind. I'm trying to get a read on what people really carry excluding the "whatever fits you best" arguement. I can think of a few things like the XD (optionally M) for capacity, the Sig for reliability, the Glock if you like recycled polypropylene (JUST KIDDING - I love to give you Glock guys the needle a little) so on & so forth. This guy wouldn't feel comfortable with carrying cocked & locked so I'm excluding the 1911 only for that reason.

Thnx,
Flip

Two shots is all you need baby!

I would say Glock 36 if you are leaning that way for size. Or, try one of the Smith & Wesson Chief's models for comfort and control... CS45 I believe they are.

I carry the XD45 compact. Seems to work for me. But you all know how that goes. One gun will not fit everyone's needs.

:iagree:

I would certainly look at the S&W M&P.

I personally carry a 1911, but I use a M&P 9mm for IDPA and it operates flawlessly.

1911. Really. 1911. Just Do It. The "Roostered and Locked" Jitters go away almost immediatly once you understand the mechanics of the firearm, and realize that it is a completely acceptable way to carry that particular model.

I have recently been carrying a Glock 36, and have found it completely suitable, except for the diminished magazine capacity. It's comfortable, small, concealable, and its .45. Problem with the glock is that you are carrying that one "Roostered and Locked" also, the only difference is the absence of a manual safety. (The Glock afficionados will tell you that there are three safetys on the pistol, but in reality the only thing between you and that firearm discharging is your trigger finger. No manual saftey.)

FWIW.

If the guy is not comfortable carrying a cocked and locked 1911 then we sure as heck should not be carrying a Glock, or any other gun without a secondary safety.

As someone with both it would be alot easier to draw in a excited moment and end up with your finger on the trigger than to draw, flip the safety, and put you finger on the trigger.

Most folks rule out the 1911 becuase they are afraid they will forget to turn the saefty off, not the other way around.

The XD is OK but the M&P has a much better stock trigger.

Also why just focus on a 45, again as someone who shoots 45, 40, 9, 38 super, 38 special they all are very good rounds. If the guy wants to feel really safe, in regards to ND's, get a revolver in 357 and be done with it

My $.02

of the 3 you mentioned, the SIG.

The SIG can be carried cocked and locked, or hammer down - your choice.
With the SIG there is no potential problem with a grip safety like on the XD.
With the SIG there is no oddball trigger you have to learn to stage properly
and reset, like on the Glock. Also, with the SIG you have second strike
capability if its needed. Not with a Glock.

In the same league qualitywise there is also the HK compact .45. Its not really
that compact, except when you compare it to the HK full size pistols. But they're
nice, and shoot pretty well.

And the Kahr P45.

Stepping down the ladder, qualitywise (and cost wise) - EAA distributes a
compact Witness .45 pistol.

Taurus has a 24/7 compact in .45, and there is the PT145 /PT745 which
is smaller and lighter yet (22oz empty). All 3 are SA/DA triggers
(single action/double action), with second strike capability. And the
PT145/PT745 couid be carried either in a holster, or as a pocket pistol,
though you'd better have larger pockets since their size is pushing it a bit.

Off the top of my head, that's all the comes to mind.
Good luck.

I vote for the XD45 like the one for sale in the classifieds section. :D

Which model of Sig? I have a 226, 229 and 239 ... None of those I would carry cocked and locked. Their is no other manual safety to prevent the trigger from being tapped... Traditional DA/SA. Unless of course you are referring to the Sig line of 1911's.

Not true. There is the P220SAO, but it is SAO. OTOH there is the P220DAK which I'm told is a pretty good DAO.

True about the SAO ... Did not realize they had that... All of mine are .40's .... The DAO is not meant to be carried to be cocked/locked as suggested though, is it?

No unlike SA/DA there is no way to keep the hammer back.

Somebody made an either/or gun that can be carried cocked & locked or SA/DA hammer down, but I don't remember who.

It's only half roostered, so at least if the two initial passive safety systems fail it isn't going to fire.
