Need To Junk A Saturday Night Special - How To Do It?

Postby tleevs on Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:12 pm

I inherited a junk gun from the 70's. After doing some research, I guess they call this thing a Saturday Night Special. It's a Raven Arms P25 pistol just like the one here:
http://jtjersey.com/Raven/raven.htm

You could buy these babies for just $50 back in the day.

I have no need for this gun so I just want to trash it. Can I legally just take it apart and maybe take a hack saw to it and throw it away...or do I need to take it somewhere?

you can legally destroy it...........make sure you do a good job

or you could save it for a gun buy back

or you could donate it to an Instructor for display purposes (hint ...hint)

or donate to a collector

or you could take it to the local PD.........personally I would choose this option last

I'm sure you will get some responses offering to buy it...........be careful (PTP or P2C).
Do whatever makes you comfortable.

If it's a true "Saturday nights Special" from what I heard those are illegal to possess since they can be destroy so easily, so I would either wait til they have a "no questions ask" municipal gun buy back, or take it apart and destroy it, this way you know it is the end of that gun,

Ravens regularly sell for near $100 on gunbrokers dot com.

Only illegal to sell, as a licensed dealer, and manufacture. Not illegal to possess.

624.716 SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIALS PROHIBITED; PENALTY.

Any federally licensed firearms dealer who sells a Saturday night special pistol, or any person who manufactures or assembles a Saturday night special pistol in whole or in part, shall be guilty of a gross misdemeanor.

 Why would any gun owner want to destroy any gun -- whether it's working or not? This topic is just plain old ridiculous. Sounds like there are plenty of folks that would be interested in this gun. There's no reason to destroy it.

Tom makes several good suggestions, we have an RSG (sp) that my partner, an FFL, obtained as part of an estate. When we took it to the gunsmith he took one look and said, no way, we were warned about these in gunsmith school. His point was working on them is a career and although German made, they are complete junk. We explained we just wanted the firing pin pulled and tossed so the gun was completely useless. The students enjoy seeing it, so an instructor could make good use of it.

I thought about trying to buy a junk gun from a student, a Jennings 22, but decided it would be better for her to get $75 from Minneapolis rather than $10 from me. Hey, they have money to advertise city water, a gun buy back should happen soon.

I don't think that gun meets the legal parameters of a "saturday night special"

If I remember right, a saturday night special has to melt at a temperature lower than 900 some degress or something (indicating it is not made of steel or alluminum, but rather a pewter type metal)

I am sure someone has the law earmarked....
Never mind the typos. My keyboard is full of beer, crumbs and Dr. Peper........and .........the typo and grammer police can go to........HE..!.....no...wait a minute......California!

Not sure of the legal definition but Wikipedia includes a picture of the Raven it under its definition:

The phrase Saturday night special is pejorative slang used in the United States and Canada for any inexpensive handgun. Saturday night specials have been defined as compact, inexpensive handguns with low perceived quality; however, there is no official definition of "Saturday night special" under federal law, though some states define "Saturday Night Special" or "Junk Guns" by means of composition or materials strength.[1][2] Low cost and availability make them attractive to low-income buyers despite their shortcomings.

If you don't want it, I think this is a pretty reasonable option.
