My Steyr M40-A1 Range Report

Postby DPro_MN on Mon Aug 31, 2009 10:41 pm

Ran 100 rounds thru the M40-A1 this weekend. Two Fail-to-Eject's in the first 20 rounds.
Teardown shows that I have the Old Ejector, so the request is in for new hardware with SAI.

My Father-in-law's Ruger P89 was an absolute puddle. Pull trigger, no boom, repeat, no boom, no mark on primer. I don't know the gun, and wasn't deemed smart enough to be allowed to see what was going on , so don't put this one on your short list! It's only value to me was to throw it and run! :o

Except for the two FTE in my M40-A1, it's accuracy was really impressive to 30 yards. :D

P89's are typically an extremely reliable gun. I'd say send it in to Ruger. They'll take care of it no questions asked.

on the ruger
was the decocker engaged? I believe one variant at least has the hammer raising and falling with each trigger pull, but the decoker bar has the firing pin shielded from being hit by the hammer.....

Thank's, both mnglocker and 1911fan!

My last words to him were to get the gun checked out by a gunsmith. I doubt that he has the manual for it.
I'm going to see what I can get from Ruger for him when he passes through here on his Fall pilgramage to Nevada. He needs to be able to rely on it.

May not listen to his son-in-law, but a manual should get his attention!

I know a guy that has a Steyr that he has not shot - he has like 10 mags for it - here is the hard part - finding a holster. I am glad you wrote up that report - seems like a good gun.

When I bring n00bs shooting, without fail, the one they like the most is the M40A1. If I had to do it all over again I'd get a 9mm instead, but it's a great gun, and a great buy.

MNNavy - Thank you for the manual link. I will put a copy in his hands when he passes thru on his way to Nevada next month. He needs some HP's as well so being the great son-in-law that I am, I'll help him out.

Pinnacle - My IWB holster is a Concealco IWB. Nice!!

David - I too want a 9mm. If Steyr doesn't have an option, it's going to be Walther.

The P99 is another one I wish I had gotten in 9MMs instead of .40. Get one if you find one. Great guns, and the shortest reset of any double action pistol in the world.

You might also want to look at the FNP, the AR24, and Glock 17 or 19. I don't have an M&P, but I've shot one and thought it was great. All are good 9MMs around the same price.

Have fun shopping!

As a testament to the Ruger P89, I bought one new 5 years ago and I have about 11,000 rounds threw it with only 2 failure to feeds. the failure to feeds were because I was using a cheap aftermarket magazine. That gun though not practical to carry is probably my favorite hand gun

David - Have you done a poll on your icon as to which pair of guns get's the first focus?
Your list is intrigueing :D . I will probably put off a 9mm purchase until 2010, but will be starting the test fires at Bill's this year. Shopping is fun :D !

SXD - I'm interested in your experience with P89 accuracy. Word from a co-worker was iffy, but you never know if they really understand pistol accuracy.
