Where is the best place to trade in handguns??

Postby RyanTV on Thu Jan 21, 2010 3:32 pm

I am interested in trading in one of my handguns and was wondering where is the best place in the metro to get my $$$$'s worth. It is a S&W M&P 340PD with a Trijicon night sight and Crimnson Trace grip. Any info would be great. Thanks

there's the sale forum here.
Otherwise, I always send people to Gander.

I wouldn't BUY a gun from Gander but I might SELL one to them.

But I'd try to sell it here first.

Are you looking to trade it, or sell? Two very different concepts there........ I would first start here. We have a marketplace forum for just that sort of thing. I would try to shy away from selling or trading to retail operations, you would be lucky to get half of going rate at most places in the metro.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

I want to sell it but the places I have been to tell me the best they can give me for it is well under what it is worth. I understand it has to be resold but still seems low.

That is a bogus price. The dang laser grips cost that at Opticsplanet.

I am not sure what you paid for it, but if you paid x for it new, and its like new and all, with papers, box etc, you should be able to get close to x-100 bucks on here, that seems to be the going breakdown. Sometimes its a bit more of a mark down, but new-100 to 150 off should be darn close.

I have sold a few guns on here and we have a good reputation among us as being upfront and fair in our dealings, those who screw around tend not to stay here.

IF you post it, there are a few forms which people have posted regarding a bill of sale, as ask for a copy of their DL and PTC or PTP and you should be fine.

Gander Mountain is notorious for low-ball offers on guns. You could add $50-$100 dollars to any price they give you and still sell it in a flash here. Just my 2cents.

I have had to sell several guns over the years. Cabela's treated me the best. They will offer you 70% of what they can sell it for, and they are usually on the high end for used guns. Cash out the door, when you probably need it most.

I'm not sure what Gander Molehill PAYS for used guns, but their price for SELLING used guns is an incredible insult to anybody's intelligence. I don't know how many times I have gone in there and seen a LEO SIG with maybe a third of the finish worn clean off of it, and a price that is for a 95% - 98% firearm. As a matter of fact, I don't think I have ever seen a USED price for any firearm they have ever had that was below 95% of LIST for the same firearm NEW. I mean, WTF???, you DELIBERATELY choose to treat ALL your used gun customers like idiots?? Christ, why couldn't Gander Molehill have gone belly up instead of the Sportsman's Warehouse??

I completely agree with Sam's description. Once in a long while, I'll see something in the used case at GM that is marked competitively, but most of the time it's just stupid. For example, I was there last week to check out whether the used Rohrbaugh was still in the case a week after someone on this forum posted about it. It was still there. Marked $959. Throw tax on that and that's not a good deal for a used (with slightly dinged finish) Rohrbaugh. Some NIB (or LNIB with 25 or rounds through them)pop up from time to time on the rohrbaugh forum for $950 to 1050. When I asked whether they would consider an offer, I was told not even to make one as they don't take offers. When the sales guy asked why I thought it was high, I explained what NIB cost (even though shipping and an FFL transfer would be needed). I then pointed out to him that they had a very used G27 in the same case marked at 559.00. Apparently the fact that it was sporting a uncle mike's rubber slip on grip cover warranted the $150 to $200 that that glock was overpriced. The sales guy was nice, but it was clearly apparent that he didn't care whether I bought a gun or not.

I think they make all their money on new buyers -- folks who don't know any better and trust that GM won't mislead them. When I stopped at the Blaine store on Wednesday of this week to pick up some ice fishing line, I checked the used cabinet as I always do even though I know better. There was a dad and what looked to be his 15 yr. old daughter at the counter, looking at all the new handguns. The guy was upset there weren't more sales people at the counter. GM has a catalog/book for the public to look through, and when he didn't see the CZ 75B he wanted in the case, he was thumbing through the catalog. He apparently found it in there, because I overheard him tell the girl that the gun was listed at msrp of over $600 in there, so GM must carry them. Instead of walking out of the store, he waited for the sales guy and then asked if they had any 75B models in stock. Who in the hell would ever pay close to 700 with tax for a 75B -- yet the guy was there trying to find one. The sales guy said they had none in stock at thais time. Thank god for that as the darn fool may have bought it.

Bottom line for the OP is that he should offer the gun he wants to sell here first. Can always go the Cabelas route thereafter if it doesn't sell here.

I've only sold two guns. One I traded even up at Frontiersman. They saw me coming a mile away but jeez I had to have that gun and what the heck they needed money to replace their back door anyway. :)

The other one I put up for consignment at Bill's in Robbinsdale. There, you set the price, they put it in a display case and take 20% if it sells. I set the price as low as I wanted to sell it at, and it didn't sell for a couple months. I ended up taking it back (for which you need a background check like buying a gun, BTW) and selling it to a fellow I knew through the other forum (That was before this one existed, I believe).

Just like with cars, person-to-person sales are the way to go unless you're OK with giving up significant dollars for convenience.

Gunbroker.com can be a good place to sell, just be sure to consider their fees and shipping when setting your floor price. There are agazillion other gun forums with very active and reliable for sale/classified sections. Try out AR15.com, thefiringline.com, thehighroad.org, or glocktalk.com for a start.
