R-P 45acp brass, is it ok?

Postby Snowgun on Sat Jun 05, 2010 1:45 am

Going through the 45acp recovered brass from the steel shoot, I was a little bummed to find that I traded some federal and Winchester brass for this R - P stuff. I'm a little new to the reloading, and I try to keep my brass to win, fed, cbc, s&B, and cull everything else out (unless It checks out ok).

What are your thoughts on this R-P stuff? I've heard it's thin and it smells funny. (ok, just thin :) ) Should I just stop being a whiner and include it?

I've found it to be fine for my needs; just as good as Fed and Win.

do NOT use "R-P" brass ... your gun will blow up!

give me your address, and I'll come by and pick it up, and dispose of it properly!

YUP. It's a brand that's only been around for a little more than a century.

I'll take it off your hands. It's really substandard stuff and will make your gun shoot very slowly. It also causes bullets to shoot in poor groups. Really bad stuff ;)

Whew!

Thanks guys! I really dodged the proverbial bullet there, good thing I checked with ya'll before utilizing this substandard, potentially hazardous brass! ;) I'll just use the 3000 cases of these I have for concrete aggregate, so that no other novice reloader is boondoggled into tempting fate.

You may want to cull out S&B as they are known for tight primer pocets and thicker rims. Any AMERC brass needs to be culled immediately. The problem with some brass, and setting up crimp dies is that neck wall thinckness can cause some bullet set back issues in some brands...be vilgalent.

Actually I'm going to dissent with many people here. R+P 45 acp brass is definitely inferior (case wall wise) to both the Winchester and Federal stuff. Take a caliper and mike the case walls. You will find the r+p brass is noticeably thinner. I first noticied this when I started resizing, the r+p brass re sized allot easier than Winchester or federal. I do load it, and it does work, but if I was to buy brass I'd buy Winchester or Federal. YMMV

There is nothing wrong with S&B brass.

For some there is primer pocket issues, ie TOO TIGHT, and on BE Forums problems have been related when loading on Dillon equipment.

Depends on the caliber and primer, I've also had issues with S&B brass being tight in the primer pocket. It's seems to be worst with wolf pistol primers.
