I figure it safe at the moment to give you two a hard time since I'm out of small arms range and the road conditions will keep you at home.

Does pose an interesting question though. You see somebody shove your kid into the back of a car. That somebody is reaching for the handle of the driver's side door (looks like they might get in and drive away). There's a few guys here who, IF their competition skills remained true, could drop that somebody from across the street. Do ya just yell (opportunity for a shot is gone now - the guy hurried up), or do ya draw and fire? (again, assuming you don't "pee your pants," "pass out," or "cry."). And, yes, I know you do the yelling before and during any shooting. Sorta makes a fella think. I don't imagine there's any way to realistically disable a car with a 45acp.

I keep buckshot in my HD shotgun. I have wondered if birdshot would be affective at hd distances, I geuss not.

Actually, I went for a bike ride today on the trail. Single speed mountain bike, studded tires, goggles, snowboard helmet = HR > 180 faster than you can say BRRRRRR

Except keep the guy driving it from driving it away. ;)

And I don't buy this idea that there is no reason to think through situations. This whole "you will cry and shut off so don't even bother" is simply ********. It only happens to people who don't consider that a situation could happen, and think and train what to do about it. Are you going to be the coolest cucumber and everything is going to go according to your fantasy plan? Hell no. But something is better than nothing. I've always been surprised at how fast and crazy and tunnel vision I got when bad/dangerous situations happened, but I've been surprised at how I could still talk to myself (a little) at the same time.

yea, all these thought experiments can be cut many different ways, and there are no right answers. But at least sometimes they help you figure out what absolutely NOT to do. And when your pants are wet that can help a little. :D

You don't train on a public forum on the internet. You don't need to "think through situations" on one either.

Good luck with the HRT training. ;)

I see your point. :geek: But thoughtful (and careful) discussion can bring awareness and allow people to do their own research. I'm curious about other points of view and experiences and they are taken with salt. Nobody is forced into any discussion they don't want to be in. Hell this whole thread is thinking through the situation of keeping your HD shotgun loaded with bird shot. Do you think we should stop posting these stories and discussing them? I don't know the answer... :?

Here is a basic viewpoint after a quick read of the story.

Idiot intruder claims he was drunk and "probably" looking for a ride. I've seen worse excuses but none come to mind...

As for the homeowner... seems like a self defense case if we can believe what's been presented. Therefore, in self defense, the threat was stopped. Furthermore, since the threat was stopped successfully, who gives a **** what the shotgun was loaded with. Could have been bean bags or skittles if the same result was achieved.

Not to say birdshot is all you'd need 100% of the time, but neither would it be slugs or rock salt.
