Caddo sheriff's office holds gun safety course for kids

Saw this from my old home town newspaper.

Every fan of "A Christmas Story" knows what happens when a kid gets a firearm for Christmas — he's liable
to shoot his eye out. Unless, of course, he's been trained in firearm safety and handling.

Saturday morning, the Caddo sheriff's office held it's First Gun Class for kids at the Sheriff's Regional Law
Enforcement Training Academy. More than a dozen children and their parents showed up to learn about operating a weapon and
firing on the range.

Safety tips

- Stop. Don't touch it without a parent. unless some other moron is going for it
- Treat every gun like it's loaded.
- Never point the gun in an unsafe direction.
- Keep your finger off the trigger outside the trigger-guard until ready to fire.
- Never point the gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.
- Be sure of the target and what's beyond it. bullets go through paper, wood, etc. ... never shoot a target without an impenetrable backstop behind, and generously around the target
- read the manual twice ... fully understand how to decock, unload, and clear the action
- before handing any gun to anyone else, empty it completely, first
- when someone hands you a gun, check that it's completely empty, immediately (even if ya jest saw 'em empty it)

I know it'll never happen ... but I've always said, if folks are truly interested in keeping kids safe from guns, they need at least 1hr/quarter K-12 on this stuff.

I figure there are two things that are paramount to keeping kids gun-safe. One, a cast iron prohibition on touching an unattended gun. Two, familiarity with guns that removes mystery. Education is really the only way to get there.

Good work, sheriff.
