Guys will be guys in most cases. We tend to recco what we have as none of us could make any mistakes. ;)

i would suggest you hit ar15.com forums and get really educated there. I did and it helped a great deal. I was in Viet Nam for 18 months and used the M16 and M16B. I went to AR15.com because i knew that the technology had changed immensely since my tour and eventual discharge in '69.
There are charts showing comparisons of most of the models and tons of how to's etc. Check it out.:

Also, you do not have to spend a mint, but you should not look at the cheapest or least expensive either. Nobody is a magician,
.........against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, so help me God.

Reading up on ARs is always a good idea. I would also suggest that you look hard to find someone that you trust that can talk you through the AR building process. When people I know or my relatives approach me about buying a rifle, or any firearm for that matter, I sit them down in front of the computer and tell them to bring a can of Mountain Dew or a cup of coffee, because it's gonna be a while. I then go through sites and tell them what to buy and what to avoid.

For building ARs, the best sites for parts are:

Brownells.com
RainierArms.com
MidwayUSA.com
BravoCompanyUSA.com

Otherwise, manufacturer websites are good places to go. In particular:

Daniel Defense
Noveske Rifleworks
LMT
Spikes Tactical
Del-Ton

For full-built rifles, you have a lower echelon and an upper echelon of rifles. The basic/lower echelon are the standard carbines with minimal options or mil-spec configurations. The quality brands are Bravo Company, Rock River, Colt, S&W and Spikes Tactical. This is not fully inclusive. For upper echelon companies, you will get more rifle but you will also pay for it. Companies like Daniel Defense, Noveske, LMT, POF-USA, LWRCi,etc.
