.45 AR Brass

Postby Rodentman on Tue Apr 19, 2011 5:49 pm

I just started my latest (ad)venture, loading .45 AR. I got Remington brass, with some Starline on order. I suppose this is one of those YMMV questions, but I read a lot of people saying that Rem brass is too thin and doesn't hold up. Very few people have any issues with Starline.

Anyone have any experience with this? Should I stick with .452 lead bullets in the Rem brass?

Well I plan to get at least 50 loaded by Friday which I have off to go to the range. Yep, I am running them thru the sizing die, chamfer and deburr, flare as little as needed, which is my usual routine. Hoping they will be durable. They don't look like the most robust brass, but I posit that my eyes really can't tell "quality" brass from otherwise.

I'd guess yer bullet dia. would depend on yer gun, not yer brass. If anything, I'd say the "thinner" brass is better ... less chance of swaging yer bullets when ya crimp.

What're ya shootin' 'em out of? ... jest curious.

Gun is a new S&W Model 22 1917 classic reissue.

I read on THR that someone could push .451 bullets into the cases by hand without flaring. I tried that with .451 and could not do so. In fact, I would not be able to properly align the bullet for seating w/o a slight flare, so I guess I don't have the issue of a goofy sizing die. Maybe Rem had a bad run at some point. Anyway, I'll get 'em loaded up by Thurs PM for the range trip.

They're cute little suckers, and yes I DID remember to get the proper shellholder.

Sweet pistol! Image

Too small of cast bullets will lead-up yer gun real quick ... don't worry 'bout werkin' the brass ... that's the name of the game! If it splits, it splits ... then chuck it!

I've loaded the same nickel cases a dozen times over ... ain't lost a case yet. Had all kinds of "experts" lecture me on how ya can't reload nickel.

Why'd ya decide not to jest shoot .45acp?

I've shot some .45 acp thru it with RIMZ clups. i just like playing with different stuff. I shot .452 cast bullets with 5.0 g Eunuch with no leading problems.

Sounds good! ... 'bout 700fps? ... nice load!

Ya know ya don't need any clips, right? ... jest a Bic pen'll do. Not as big of a deal if yer used to SAA's.

Otherwise, I'd probly do the same ... if I didn't already have a bunch of other wheelguns in other rimmed calibers. 8-)

I bought a Redding 93189 flaring die today since my Lee universal expander will not reach the .45 AR case, and barely flares the .45 acp. I suspect there's a difference in the shellholder due to the wide rim of the AR.

Now my question is: What is the difference between the Redding 85189 Taper Crimp Die (which is what I think is in my Competition Carbide .45 acp die set) and the .45 AR Profile Crimp Die? Well, I suspect the latter is for the AR specifically and is not designed for a case that headspaces on the case mouth. But the Sinclair website shows that die for both cases:

http://www.sinclairintl.com/1/1/8208-re ... o-rim.html

Midsouth shows the die for the AR only...

http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/i ... 0007686189

Any thoughts?

Some .45acp dies start with a taper-crimp, but if ya keep screwin' 'em down, they'll eventually apply a roll crimp ... my Hornady's do that.

OK thanks, confirms what I read. Not sure if I need/want to roll crimp but it's nice to know I can.

The expander works well. I bell just enough to averd shaving the bullets.

You do not need to roll crimp the 45 Auto Rim round. A taper crim works just fine, good enough for the 45ACP good enough for the Auto Rim. Remington and Starline Brass are both good to go. There was some PMC floating around about 5 years ago...that was some thicker rimmed brass and the case wall was a tad thicker.
