Just bought my first handgun

Postby BWinger on Wed May 18, 2011 9:37 pm

A new-to-me (used) Ruger Mark ii Target in stainless with a 5.5" barell. I had to stop at Lowes today in Rogers and Cabelas is just down the road from there. Turns out if you go in the middle of the day during the week so actually get great service! I felt like I was the only guy in the store. They gladly took my $269.

There are a few minor dings and scratches, but it looks great inside the action and the muzzle appears fine. It fits me well. Can't wait to run a couple hundred rounds through it!

Small ding near the muzzle - thought this was the worst of the wear, looks MUCH better in the real life:

It might be nice to take it apart and give it a thorough cleaning, maybe buff out some of the scratches etc. Overall, I'm really excited!

Ruger Mark II....bitch to clean, but reliable as hell. I remember getting lots of minor cuts as a kid cleaning these for very little money for my uncle who used them to teach.

Those things are a bitch and a half to take apart and reassemble if you don't know what you're doing. You don't want to end up with the dreaded bag of Ruger. Make sure you read read read before you attempt such a thing.

I plan on shooting it some before I attempt any disassembly. I have heard about the difficulty in putting it back together. I've also heard it becomes much easier once you've done it a few times. Turns out I'm fairly mechanically inclined too so that should help once I decide to strip it down.

Congrats on the new purchase! You will most definitely have to report back on how it fires etc.

not sure what's so hard about taking them apart. I just got one of these myself for the first time ever.

Less than 5 minutes watching a youtube video on it and it comes apart quick and easy. Goes together just as easy.

BTW.

Call and talk to Ruger Customer service in Arizona.

I found out they upgraded the rebound spring on the firing pin with the MK III. Mine was broken under the firing pin. If it's not broken, your firing pin will have spring tension to hold in the firing pin retaining pin. Otherwise it will slide out when you turn the bolt to the side. Due to this, they are providing the spring and the guide free of charge to owners of the MK I and MKII.

Clean??? oh come on now everyone - cleaning a mark is like changing the oil in an american car. give it a little spray and blow every once in a while and those tanks will outlive all of us...

I'm aiming for a 6.5" Blackhawk in blue. Something to tag along with me this fall on hunting trips and to keep in the nightstand the rest of the year. After that I'm thinking either a 9mm or a smaller framed revolver - maybe an SP101 - in .357 for potential future carry.

There's another shotgun and a Marlin lever gun in there too.

The more I look around, the longer the list gets! :D
