Arizona - former marine shot 60 times by SWAT...

What the heck happened here?

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/05/27/report-marine-fatally-shot-swat-team-did-open

I read the FoxNews version, as well as the ABC & the AZ Daily Star versions - all three give a bunch of details regarding the actions of the SWAT team, and the Fox version states that "nothing illegal was found during a subsequent search of the residence".

While I've generally got a problem with the use of SWAT in situations like this, that isn't the problem this time. Did the guy do something illegal? If yes, then he should be described as a criminal or thug - if no, the lead should be something about SWAT having murdered an innocent man.

I know this isn't unusual for media reports, this one just bugged me more than usual as his status as a Marine & Iraq war vet seem to be entirely irrelevant to the situation...

There was a post on Andrew's forum with a link to this story on the Oath Keepers' web site.
Reading that story tends to make one wonder if his status as a gun owning veteran did factor into the SWAT team being used.

I suspect the police are taking some serious heat for this.
And thus there'll be little if any information coming from them that doesn't support their actions.

I am sure getting shot by police inside his home is not something he fought for.

Depending on the story you read, he was holding a rifle, or no rifle was mentioned.
Also, in some stories they raided his house, in others his was one of a few houses that could have possibly been targeted.

It's chilling when the SWAT team opens fire. Here is video of the actual breaching of the door -

two things that stuck out at me, on that ... the way the chick says "FIREARM" ... and as they begin firing, the one guy kinda in the back to the left side ... he actually has to get up on his toes to shoot over his buddies ... to join in

I realize SWAT's serious ****, but I'd think if at least 2 'er 3 of my buddies are in a better position, and already firing, I'll wait 'n see how they fare

I dunno if SWAT typically serves warrants ... so if that was a special occasion, 'less the guy was playing dead on his front lawn 'fore they showed up, it seems like he was condemned from the start

that said, I dunno if I'd show up to the door with an AR, if there's sirens blaring

also, how did they not know there was a wife 'n child? ... wouldn't ya rather wait 'til he leaves the house ... make like a traffic stop? ... ya, he could try 'n run ... so? ... wait fer him at home ... don't send SWAT to a Marine's home with his wife 'n child inside Image

Sheriff Joe is the Maricopa County Sheriff (Phoenix). This happened near Tuscon, I think is Pima County.

This. I'm waiting for a conspricist someone to say that the siren sounds were added to the video afterward.

I believe this was a SEARCH warrant for the house, not an ARREST warrant for him.

Ok ... good to know!

... but, SWAT ... for a SEARCH warrant? Image

They went there ready to shoot ... I'm the armchair quarterback, but I say wait 'til the Marine with the wife 'n kid leaves the house ... serve it on the wife ... w/o SWAT ... at least, AZ SWAT. 60rd? Ya, I get it ... but I expect better, of SWAT ... realistic, 'er no.

My $20 says he was dirty. But I'm guessin' he didn't deserve to die fer it.

If you are asleep after a 12-hour night shift in a mine and get woken up by your wife who is scared *******, you would be surprised how you might react.

Given that this was 2 hours after he got home, seems like they could have just grabbed him before he entered the house.

Maybe the swat team was up for funding or something?

The Sheriff in Pima County is Dupnik, the same guy that said it was right wing talk that caused the Giffords shooting in Tucson earlier this year. He is an extreme left wing, anti-gun sheriff. He doesn't like the AZ liberal carry laws either.

I read a statement by the murdered Marine's wife yesterday. She said the rifle that he was supposed to have been holding was dropped there by the SWAT team. She said he did not own an AR 15 rifle. SWAT said they would investigate whether that was true or not. They didn't deny it.
