No Gun Safety Classes during shutdown

Postby DeanC on Tue Jul 05, 2011 2:20 pm

From the DNR Wesbite:

17. Can DNR volunteers continue to work?

No. Volunteer activities are suspended during the shutdown. The only exception is for citizen science monitors, who do independent data collection such as loon counting and precipitation recording.

Because no volunteers will be working, classes taught by volunteers, such as firearms safety classes, will not take place.

What if classes are taught by DNR certified instructors that do not work for the DNR? I would think they would still honor the certificates that take place during their hiatus?

Nobody is there to send registration forms.

Nobody is there to process completion certificates or issue cards.

If the instructor has supplies he might be able to give a class, but he will not be authorized to do so and probably not covered by insurance and none of the students will get their cards.

Not familiar with the process. If it was listed on their site as a class, and the instructor has materials, then by definition was he/she not already authorized to do so? And if there is no state government to recend that authorization, then ... when they open back up could not the paper work be submitted at that time?

I refer you back to the DNR who says all classes are suspended. I'm not going to put my ass on the line when it's the government telling me not to do a class. Especially when I am a volunteer.

But are they all volenteers? Just not familiar with the structure. I know at the price of the class an instructor is not making any money doing these but I assume there is some compensation to the instructor from the course fee. For the record I appretiate anyone willing to teach such a class however if there is a fee for service are they still considered a volunteer? Especilly since they are part of a larger "training" organization? How is it any different than a carry course in that regard?

The DNR FAS class is held by volunteer instructors. There is no pay given to instructors for the training received by them.

:rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

All things considered it costs the instructors

ETA........compensation, if any, is in the form of an annual dinner sporadically held in various regions.

I have not been invited to a DNR dinner since 2006. They do have my email.

Alright I get it, they make no money and are volunteers and likely will not hold any classes.

Though did this structure change in recent history? When my eldest took the class at bills a few years ago it was around $50, not the $15 that is currently being advertised, the class had about 50 some students and 4 instructors.

I got a free pen last year for 5 years of service. :cheerleader2:

Then some kid stole it when he was filling out his forms.
