Another factor to consider in this discussion, which I believe, is about violent crime committed by urban youths, is what role the credit rating downgrade may have. If the govt reacts with aggressive austerity in the area of the give away programs, which in many cases are one way of buying off some of them, keeping the crime rate artificially lower, we can expect an increase in the future. When a friend was robbed at knifepoint in a rest area near Janesville, WI, the Police officer who came to fill out the report told him that this kind of thing had increased after the closing of the GM plant in town. I believe that we'll see similar results if govt cuts social programs that affect these people.
