Rick Perry packs potential
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view/2011_0816perry_packs_potential_and_mitt_just_fires_blanks/
Yesterday, while Texas Gov. Rick Perry was campaigning at the Iowa State Fair, a reporter from Politico.com asked him whether he was armed. Perry, a known gun owner and enthusiast, refused to answer the question.

“That’s why it’s called ‘concealed,’ ” Perry told the reporter.

And that’s why — unless there are some Texas-sized skeletons in his closet — we’ll be calling Perry “the Republican nominee.”

Can you imagine Mitt Romney answering the question that way? More significantly, can you imagine Mitt being asked? Of course Mitt’s not packing. The last thing Mitt fired was a few thousand employees at the latest company “rescued” by Bain Capital.

But with Rick Perry, you just never know.

(FWIW - Iowa does, under its new law, recognize Texas carry permits).

Good for him on being pro gun rights.

However, awhile back Texas had the opportunity to tell the TSA where to go when the legislature overwhelmingly supported a bill making what they do in airports (touching vaginas, viewing naked children, etc.) a crime. The TSA sent a nasty gram telling Texas that if the bill became law, they would be unable to make sure flights were secure, and GOVERNOR PERRY torpedoed the bill.

He is, IMO, a fraud. He does not earn my vote.

Signed bill allowing non documented students (AKA ILLIEGALS ) into Texas University programs.

Will absolutely not get vote over that.

He also allowed an innocent man to be executed.

Where is he on global warming today? Was he for it before he was against it?

http://pajamasmedia.com/andrewklavan/2011/08/15/my-heart-stirred-a-review-of-rick-perrys-speech/

With this, the Perry speech began to lift off and become truly elegant and excellent. It was a repudiation not merely of Barack Obama and his horrible record, but of the underlying ideas that guide and motivate them. This is what we need. This is what we have to have. We need smart politics – sure. We need a reasonably appealing and scandal-free candidate – of course. But if that candidate is not willing to speak out loud and bold against Obama’s ideas and in favor of the ideas of the American founders then we cannot win the minds of the people for the business that has to be done. Beyond pat phrases like “big government,” and “low taxes,” and “balanced budget,” we conservatives have got to let people know what we stand for and why. Perry did that – he made a beginning anyway. And he made it clear he’s not afraid to say much more.

“I’ll promise you this,” Perry said, winding up to his peroration:

I’ll work every day to make Washington, D.C. as inconsequential in your life as I can.

When I heard that, my heart actually stirred. Now there – there – is hope and change I can believe in.

I'm not convinced that Perry isn't a poser. But if he is, he's hitting the right poses.

Yeah, but Ron Paul is *still* better.

Far better.

Meh. I am guessing Ron Paul would do the same.

I’ll work every day to make Washington, D.C. as inconsequential in your life as I can.

The first step is to create a new government agency - the Department of Less Government. The first thing we will do is take a hard look at repealing the Government Paperwork Reduction Act which has become unreasonably large.

As a Texas Republican, Perry is, of course, a friend of the oil and gas industry. He even stuck by BP during the Gulf of Mexico gusher, saying the well blowout was "an act of God" and insisting that he had "full confidence" in the company's response.

Actually, IIRC Ron Paul is pretty tough on illegal immigration. As a Libertarian, it's one of the few issues where he and I don't quite see things the same way. But I'll overlook that as on about 99.6% of the issues that matter, we DO agree.
